Research and Restoration of the Essential Filters of the Sea (REEFS)

The REEFS project is a pilot international initiative for focused and specific scientific research on environmental impact of the artificial reefs on particular Black Sea sites in front of Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine.Artificial reefs are often defined as any material or matter deliberately placed in an area of the marine environment where that structure does not exist under natural circumstances for the purpose of protecting,regenerating, concentrating or increasing populations of living marine resources, or for enhanced recreational use of the area. The REEFS project is designed to contribute to a number of international strategic papers by adding a practical and active approach for restoration of the essential filters of the Black Sea. Achievements: 5 of partnerships contracts / agreements establishing permanent relations among institutions / agencies active in the environmental sector ;57 Number of technicians / researchers completing activities and achieving new skills and competencies;6 institutions active in environmental protection adopting innovations developed by project
