Renovating the cross-border road network
Start date: Dec 31, 2004, End date: Nov 29, 2006 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project aims at improving the intermunicipal road network leading to the Ponte Vittorio border crossing and intends to consolidate the cross-border road axes, facilitating the crossing of the border to the nearby Republic of Slovenia. The project focuses on the connecting road system that, from state road n. 356, runs towards the Ponte Vittorio border crossing through the upper section of Natisone river and reaches Slovenia. The afore-mentioned road complex is made up of several municipal roads that, at the bottom of state road n. 356, connect Attimis, Faedis and Taipana with their mountain villages: Forame, Platischis, Subit and Canebola, and through the Ponte Vittorio border crossing reach Kobarid (Caporetto) through Bergogna and Boreana. The project is somehow a completion of Cornappo provincial road n. 38 as a variation of state road n. 356 - which provides a connection with the Republic of Slovenia - thus offering an alternative and more favourable route compared to the Eastern Ringroad section to the North of Udine. The project is based on the premise that improving the road network is a prerequisite for interchange at all levels and is essential to enable contacts between people, resources and ideas and therefore to ensure mutual integration across the border. This initiative encompasses an area which has a very high potential in terms of tourism, nature and environment, therefore an improved road network could also encourage investments on the territory, particularly in tourist facilities.
