Lycée Paul-Emile Victor is a medium-sized vocational school that is located in the suburbs of Angers in western France. It offers a mixed academic and vocational curriculum and delivers qualifications from NVQ to BTEC First in the industrial and tertiary fields (sales, retail, customer services, administration) to around 365 students. Our school has always made every effort to ensure our students progression and success. We believe that fostering internationalization will contribute to this, and that is why our staff have agreed to start a European mobility project for 2016-2018. Within the ERASMUS+ programme, two flows of 7 and 10 students will carry out a 3-week work placement in a local business based in or around Canterbury, south-east England during their final year (1st group in March 2017). They are part of the European Section class that was launched in September 2014 and are preparing for a BTEC in sales, retail and customer services.Taking a placement abroad will be a unique opportunity for our students to:- observe and apply working methods and professional techniques through real world of work activities (in real estate agencies, tourist offices, schools, shops, department stores, supermarkets…);- improve their language skills and hence their fluency in English;- build on social and international relationships within a working and daily environment, fully appreciate its cultural wealth, become more tolerant and open minded European citizens;- develop autonomy, adaptability and initiative.They will acquire new skills specific to their trades, which will encourage them to continue studying at third level. It will also provide a better integration into the labour market (locally, nationally and internationally).The staff involved in the project will be given the chance to:- get a better understanding of the British working methods and of the British vocational training system by comparing them to the French ones;- develop European cooperation with their partner and the English tutors;- reinforce interdisciplinary work and maximize teaching methods.As far as we are concerned, our school will try hard to:- develop its international dimension;- promote its vocational subjects inside and outside school;- mobilise students towards a long-term project;- make them aware of the importance of learning English;- fuel all students’ desire and interest in a mobility project.The voluntary participants, mainly coming from varied ethnic groups and low-income families, benefit from 2 extra hours of English a week throughout their three years at school. They can develop both language and professional competencies thus preparing them for their placement abroad. Every student will be equipped with language, cultural, professional and pedagogical preparation, from learning vocabulary and expressions essential in everyday life, keeping the Euro Section blog up to date and liaising regularly with the tutors.Our students will then spend three weeks in host families and local companies selected carefully from our partner College’s database. Paul-Emile Victor’s staff will exchange with their partner at Canterbury College on a regular basis so as to set up contracts and communicate on the needs, aims and priorities of each participant. They will work in tandem with their local representative to divide missions and tasks and produce mobility material. The documents such as the students’ CVs, diaries, assessment grids, attendance grids… will allow students to prepare for their exams and certifications in the most efficient way (Europass, Europro, the Euro Section Distinction…). PEV’s staff, the partner and the employers set the deadlines together. This includes the preliminary visit by 2 teachers in October-November 2016, the trainees’ induction on their first day at College, the monitoring of the placements by both parties and the final assessment on the last day on site. They would also agree on keeping in touch regularly to best meet the trainees’ needs and to offer appropriate and reactive solutions in case of problems.This mobility project is a unique opportunity for our students to enrich themselves personally and professionally. They will no doubt gain the required skills for their CVs, which will enhance their employability and offer them better labour market outcomes. They will develop their European open-mindedness too. It will make vocational courses more attractive inside and outside school and encourage prospective applicants to join the Euro Section Class or the programme itself.Paul-Emile Victor’s school will thus reinforce its partnership, do its best to promote itself locally and beyond in order to ensure further development and expand its European cooperation.
