Reinforcing French across the primary curriculum
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: Nov 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

We are a multi-cultural school in inner London. In the English stream a quarter of our pupils are eligible for pupil premium. We benefit from having a bilingual stream in the building but we feel that we could benefit further if more of the staff were able to communicate well with our French counterparts. This would enable us to really give our pupils in the English stream a head start in French to equip them for life and would enable our two streams to work together as one. We have a specialist French teacher and MFL coordinator who delivers a weekly lesson from Nursery to Year 6 but we know that languages are easier to digest if delivered in daily bite sized chunks. We want to train our teachers and give them the confidence to do integrate some more French into the daily routine. We have eight class teachers who would like to participate in the intensive language course in France. Most of them have a beginners or intermediate level of French. Some have studied French at school and some have studied other languages. The participants will take part in a preparatory French course in school beforehand to prepare them for the intensive nature of the course in France. This will also serve to ensure that they are fully committed to learning French. The MFL coordinator would like to take part in a job shadow at our partner school in Paris. This will strengthen further our links with Ecole Mademoiselle In Paris and will enable us to secure a long lasting partnership which will be mutually beneficial to both schools both linguistically and culturally . We have already undertaken a number of international projects with both this school and our other partner school in Lyon which we included in our application for the full international school award this month. In the future we hope also to be able to organize a short trip to France for pupils and maybe even to visit our friends in Paris. We feel that this project with have a long term benefit to the school and allow teachers to develop professionally . It will create better unity and understanding between the streams at Wix . The upskilling of the class teachers will serve to embed the learning of French in the English stream and the pupils will see the importance of learning another language through the good example set by their teachers. The pupils are always interested and inspired when they can view their teachers as learners and will be keen to support their learning. In the UK there are not enough primary school teachers who have the necessary skills and training to deliver the language requirement of the primary curriculum which became statutory in September 2014. We would like to upskill our staff and help to fulfill this training need. The Erasmus plus project is an invaluable opportunity for all those involved. We hope that in the future this project will help our pupils to be able to compete with other Europeans for who are often fluent in at least one other language.
