Raising participation and employability of migrant youth
Start date: Apr 4, 2016, End date: Oct 3, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Nowadays migrant young people face many obstacles in overcoming the barriers that prevent them from becoming fully engaged participants in European society. Discrimination, language barriers, poverty, social exclusion, lower rates of education and skill levels, cultural stumbling blocks, higher risks of exploitation, and increased risk of becoming victims of crime are problems they face. Our project's aim is to empower these young people with the tools they need to overcome these barriers so that they can be fully involved in social and political life of the society and tackle unemployment. Specifically we wish to explore volunteering as a tool for preventing marginalization, poverty, disenfranchisement and increasing educational and trade skills in a non-formal setting. The objectives of the exchange are:- to use volunteer activities to enhance the skills that youth with migrant background need in order to increase their employability as well as show the value of volunteering as a way to increase language skills, cultural tolerance, communication, peer interaction, and the ability to take on a project and see it through- to promote social inclusion and well-being- to involve young people in learning the skills needed to be effective problem solvers, people who can take ownership of the programme and thus develop more sense of follow through and sustainability- to raise awareness about EU citizenship and the rights that go with it- to empower young people and peer leaders with the skills to recognize that they can be agents of change in their communities- to develop participants' knowledge and motivation to understand the Erasmus + programme and its potential- to motivate and support participants to act as multipliers in promoting common values- to use the exchange as a springboard for networking between participants that will be part of the plan to sustain and disseminate the ideas and tools learned in the exchange- to introduce Youthpass accreditation instruments to participants- to explore instruments, exchange experiences and possibly develop news ideas for the promotion of youth participation and youth empowerment among groups of migrant youth, youth government structures and NGOs.The exchange will have a strong non-formal learning dimension pursued in workshops and other strong non-formal education tools. We will use non-formal education methods to expand the views of young people and project leaders on the definition of youth empowerment/participation as an alternative to marginalization, unemployment and social exclusion. At the workshops and volunteering activities we will consider practical applications and explore ways of youth participation/empowerment through community oriented actions/projects in mixed nationality groups. Each national group will introduce and multiply the values of volunteering to other peer groups at the dissemination phase of the project in order to further empower youth to overcome the obstacles in their lives. Through this project we plan to encourage young people to develop skills and competences aimed at promoting active participation, citizenship, community involvement, increased work related skills and decreasing marginalization, social exclusion, and poverty. We expect that the young volunteers representing the partner organizations from different parts of Europe will be able to share their approaches on the idea of publicizing voluntary actions as the way of active citizenship position. This will be done during the artistic workshops in the informal setting. The Exchange will strive to achieve a balance between personal development and collective activity, facilitating the integration of migrant youth, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, facing employment difficulties and experiencing social disenfranchisement. We hope to encourage a spirit of initiative. The actions and performances that will be developed by young people during the exchange will help them and other youngsters to recognize the value of such experience.
