Que les langues se délient! Les tablettes numériques pour une pédagogie différenciée et collaborative.
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Background :Our project is a response to an increasing concern : the demotivation of students and our teaching methods that are no longer in tune with the (technological) reality of our students.OBJECTIVES:The project aims to develop an "active" teaching method where the student becomes the actor of his own learning pace and so respecting his own learning profile, using his senses (sound and image), seeking solutions to solve problems, developing strategies to solve problems, ... The student will learn through "making". He will also learn by cooperating with his peers and interacting with them.In terms of listening skills for example, the student will follow his own rhythm (the fastest students will have extra activities), with images (in addition to sound) as a support, with unknown word searching through online dictionaries (mijnwoordenboek.nl ...), in doing online research on the topic in order to better identify the problem, by doing online research on the topic in order to better understand the issue. This listening activity may lead to other (speaking, writing, reading) skills where students will interact with peers to build or produce a final project (project-based learning).DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES AND METHODOLOGY :This project will encourage :- customized courses respecting the needs and pace of each student (differentiated pedagogy)- the autonomy and initiatives (project-based learning)- a collaborative approach (team work) which will develop exchange between students and teacher (the teacher becomes a companion and no longer a job provider). There will , therefore, be alternation between individual work phases and collaboration phases to complete the tasks .The language course will be placed in a multisensory dynamic (image, sound) by reproducing conditions close to those of immersion in a foreign language. The focus will primarily be put on listening comprehension activities and speaking activities but the other two skills ( writing / reading ) will also be tested.LISTENING : the audio and video files are downloaded on our shared resource site that students can access from the classroom or home. The students listen to the passage at their own pace with headsets. Sound and image (video) will enhance understanding. The visual or auditory, analytical or synthetic , slow or fast students will ALL evolve effectively. In that way group dynamics will be well established.SPEAKING / WRITING : collection of information (arguments ...) individually or in pairs will result in an exchange within each team. Corrections and amendments will be made ( cooperation / assistance) , comments will be drafted (app . " Evernote " ). Synchronization to expand in quantity and quality ( idiomatic and grammatical structures ) will take place for the whole class . The list of arguments produced with a mental map (app . " Mindjet Maps" ) will serve as a support for speaking in interaction.PARTICIPANTS :Up to now, more than 350 students (aged 15-19 from vocational education and technical sections) and 9 language teachers are involved in the process thanks to the pack of 24 tablets that we have. The acquisition of a second pack will double that number by involving lower degrees as well (12-16 years old students).IMPACT AND EXPECTED RESULTS :In that way we hope to boost our education by making it more attractive (for teachers and students) and more modern in order to increase motivation and job satisfaction ( teachers and students ) and to improve language skills.POTENTIAL LONG-TERM RESULTS :This new pedagogy will be an asset for the future career of the students because a better knowledge of foreign languages is a plus on the labor market. In addition, the project is likely to lead students to more autonomy which is an advantage in the business world where workers need to be more adaptable .
