Putting the Study of the EU Online in Ireland
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project proposes the creation of a new online postgraduate module, GV6120 Politics and Policies of the European Union. The module will target students of an existing postgraduate programme (who are part-time students in full-time employment) and full-time postgraduate students from across the University who do not have a social science background. Both student cohorts do not traditionally engage with European Studies. The proposed module is responsive to feedback from students, graduates and stakeholders. The delivery of an online module is designed to facilitate student accessibility and self-directed learning which caters to the profile of a diverse mix of students. The online module also overcomes some of the difficulties faced by part-time distance students. The module embraces technology and aims to deliver a unique and effective learning environment and experience. The online module will include powerpoints, lesson plans, video lectures (using Panopto technology), discussion boards, multi-media content, readings, weblinks and assessments. It will be delivered over the course of a semester. It will engage students in dynamic ways and simultaneously allow them to engage individually with the learning process. It is envisaged that the provision of an online module will elevate the numbers of students undertaking this area of study as there are no comparable offerings at University College Cork or indeed at other Irish institutions. This diversification of the EU studies teaching process aims to expand and revitalise the study of the EU in Ireland. It also seeks to respond to a pressing need to upskill Irish graduates with a view to nurturing the creation of a new generation of professionals who are competent, knowledgeable and skilled. The benefits of this online teaching initiative will be reaped by students, staff, the institution, the political science community and the European Studies/Jean Monnet community.
