Proyecto Sapere Aude-Mejora de los resultados educativos de jóvenes tutelados a través de la mentoría
Start date: Sep 5, 2016, End date: Sep 4, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

Recent studies at European level, show significant differences in the career and academic performance of children and youth in care in its various forms (residential care and foster care) compared to the general population. This happens paradoxically, despite the large investment in resources and professional involvement they gather.. Given the role of education in the social ascension, the failure to adequately address this aspect helps to perpetuate the risk of exclusion in their life trajectories. The Sapere Aude project "dare to know" aims to promote the educational success of young people in care through a mentoring initiative specifically designed for this purpose and with the coordinated support from residential centers and schools. We propose a project with a European dimension that will address this issue from different perspectives and national idiosyncrasies while identifying common elements and contrasting and exchanging good practice in this approach with academic accuracy. The project has a duration of 2 years and involves 6 organizations from 5 European countries (Spain, France, Austria, Germany and Croatia) and with three different and complementary profiles: experience in children and youth care, experience in mentoring and research and evaluation. The Project objectives are:1)To promote and improve the educational trajectories of adolescents and youth in care.2) Improving the efficiency of care services, demonstrating that timely and coordinated actions can achieve significant positive results in improving academic outcomes of youth in care at a low cost3) To promote a more cohesive society through the involvement of volunteer mentors and relevant stakeholders The beneficiaries of the project will be1) young people aged 12-17 in care who will improve their educational outcomes, 2) social organizations interested in implementing mentoring initiatives to support these young people through their access to training materials and 3) social actors in the environment of the young people in care that will gain awareness and capacity to address the issue from different angles allowing the identification improvement areas. The activities and results of the project are: 1. A specific Mentoring Manual is developed to address the educational needs of young people in care that includes a mentoring model and a guide of procedures to implement in practice a mentoring activity (O1)2. Training contents are generated to train mentors to support specifically young people in care in improving their academic outcomes (O2).3. A training course for trainers to train mentors is implemented transnationally (C1)4. Trainings are held locally to train mentors so they can provide support to young people in care during the implementation of a pilot mentoring project (funded by the organizations themselves)5. staff directly involved with young people in care (social workers and teachers) gain awareness and capacity to address the issue from different angles allowing the identification improvement areas in coordination with the work done by the mentors.6. A 9 month pilot mentoring project is implemented jointly in coordination with stakeholders directly involved with the youngsters in care (social workers and teachers). Its benefits are evaluated with academic accuracy (O3) 7. 1 International Conference is held (E1)8. 4 transnational meetings are organized9. a website is developed to disseminate the project results. 10. 4 bulletins for project dissemination purposes are created11. All products are disseminated at regional, national and European level through the network of contacts of the partner organizations. The project will directly impact on young people in care that participate in the mentoring pilot project and receive coordinated support from the mentors and relevant stakeholders (teachers and social workers). Project partners will gain strength in their strategic work in the field of mentoring. Social organizations will have training resources to successfully implement a mentoring initiative. Administrations will learn about the efficiency and benefits of mentoring initiatives.
