Project management for cross-cultural exchange projects in Europe
Start date: Jun 26, 2014, End date: Jun 25, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Thanks to the EU regional labour markets have been replaced by one single European market. As a consequence, employers and employees face new demands which also our students have to meet in their future work and private life. These demands imply not only a certain degree of mobility and flexibility, but also linguistic competence, tolerance and openness – qualities that promote cross-cultural competence which students should acquire through intercultural education. In order to effectively develop and enhance these important skills and attitudes, school teachers have to have the necessary linguistic and cross-cultural competences or should improve them, especially since these competences are not necessarily part of the actual teacher training. This also applies to project management competencies which are required to meet the demands mentioned above. Eventually cross-cultural exchange projects should enable not only our students to become citizens who are open towards Europe, but also the whole school (Oskar-Maria-Graf-Gymnasium in Neufahrn bei Freising) – including our teachers. Accordingly, it is essential for teachers to attend training courses that deal with cross-cultural experience and project management in order to acquire cross-cultural skills as well as interdisciplinary and project oriented competencies. In order to acquire the aforementioned skills and competencies most efficiently, it was essential that three of our teachers attended the training course “Project management for cross-cultural exchange projects in Europe” (KA1) time-shifted and together with teachers from other countries. The teachers could improve their cross-cultural communication skills not only during the course but also during leisure activities. Besides in two courses the teachers had to communicate in English and could therefore improve their linguistic skills. At the same time our teachers could find and get to know potential partners for future projects: During the first training program in October 2014 an idea for a KA2-project to support high achievers was developed together with colleagues form the Instituut Spijker in Hoogstraten, Belgium. When the Belgian colleagues were visiting us in September 2015 to do a job-shadowing project, we worked together on our idea. We created an outline of the project that we could present at the 2nd and 3rd training program in October 2015 in order to gain new partners. Thus we were able to find two partner schools, the Gimnazijum nr 1 im Jana Pawla II (Poland) and the Prva gimnazija Maribor (Slovenia). The Belgian school established the contact with the Katedralskolan i Skara (Sweden), so that in March 2016 the application for a KA2-project could be completed and finally handed in. In July 2016 the project (“BRAINS IN ACTION”- Exchanging New Ways of Learning and Teaching for High Achievers in a European Network”) was approved. In addition in March 2016 an eTwinning-project (“Dangerous Liaisions”) was carried out together with the schools from Belgium and Sweden as well as two schools from France (Strasbourg / Orsay). By attending the training program the three participating teachers were able to improve their cross-cultural project management competencies, to successfully apply for a KA2-project (after successfully completing a COMENIUS project in 2015) and to put new ideas into practice in their lessons. However, the project also had an impact on the whole school: The three colleagues disseminated the information gained at the program and promoted a positive attitude towards the European Idea among the whole staff of the school, the students and the parents. The establishment of a tradition of European school projects has been incorporated in our school development programme, which has been approved by all the members of the teaching staff and the “Schulforum”, an important elected decision-making body consisting of teachers, students and parents. Thus did not only the three participating teachers profit from the programme, but also the whole school as the three teachers imparted their information and experience to the whole teaching staff. What is more they could inspire the all members of the school community to improve their cross-cultural competencies and to participate in cross-cultural projects. The aims of our new European project are to develop and enhance our students’ cross-cultural, linguistic and social skills, also with the use of eTwinning, while focussing on high-achieving students, in order to prepare them for the new demands of the European and international market.
