PROJECT
FINISHED
Lentiz education group aspires to be a provider of challenging and high qualitative types of education, next to being a professional and desirable employer. To realise this ambition we, as an education group, always have three fundamental standing points, namely connecting world, being relevant and exceeding expectations. Lentiz | LIFE College, part of Lentiz educationgroup, is a school for (pre)vocational education in Schiedam. Eighty percent of the population of the school are foreign children, of which 60% lives in so-called poverty areas. Most of our pupils are from families with a low social economic status. Our pupils are often insufficient integrated in the mainstream society; their language skills are weak and we notice a high level of structural unemployment in their surroundings. The philosophy of the school has four pillars:
1 08:00 o’clock – 20:00 o’clock concept. The school implemented a 8-8 concept, so pupils can have their breakfast at school. After school there are workshops, partly integrated in the timetable, to introduce our pupils to a world of sports and other activities which they don’t know.
2 Pre vocational education and vocational education in one organization in an ongoing learning-teaching trajectory regarding content and approach. By doing so the number of dropouts reduces a lot.
3 Follow your dream!.... Our education focusses on talent development of the pupils, in which the continuation to vocational or higher education or a job is an important element. We’ve given this continuation a permanent place in the way we educate by implementing ‘dialogical’ education by starting asking our pupils questions like: what is your dream, what is your passion, where do you want to go?
4 Cooperation with external partners. The world of education isn’t used to intense cooperation with external partners. This kind of cooperation asks for a different approach of all partners, which goes beyond the level of ‘I’m going to do my thing as you do yours’. We have partners like SWS Welzijn, which is a youth work organization and the Library of Schiedam. Both have a physical place in the school. Together we’ve developed a new, joint primary process with a focus on the development of our shared target group.
Results:
- German, who completed the course, will implement his new knowledge in the lessons for his MAVO classes (pre vocational education) This way, the whole team will be able to use the appropriate jargon in their lessons so pupils will be better equipped for their further education and/or job.
- German teacher, who completed the German course shares his knowledge in the teams he works in. He shares his knowledge by sharing the glossary he has made. This way, the whole team will be able to use the appropriate jargon in their lessons so pupils will be better equipped for their further education and/or job. This intellectual input will also be shared with the other Lentiz schools, who provide the pupils with the subject of the German language.
These activities fit the strategic vision of Lentiz | LIFE College to educate intercultural competent pupils, who are able to take their place in the international context of our society. Many pupils aspire to work in the trade business. One of the most important countries for the Netherlands businesswise is Germany. Therefore we need to prepare our pupils for their dream by providing lessons in the German language and culture. These actions of professionalization support these ambitions.
The most important activities and methods are:
Preparation phase
There will be three internal meetings where the starting level of the teacher is measured and to compose the learning agreement for him. Further the teacher will match his learning goals with the vision of the education group and the vision of Lentiz | LIFE College.
Executive phase
In this phase the teacher will participate in the language course in Berlin.
Reflecting phase
The German teacher will use this phase of six weeks after the course to reflect on his learning goals and how they’re going to disseminate their knowledge.
Disseminating phase
Dissemination is done through meetings of the teachers from the same subject and Lentiz meetings for all schools, in which among other things the glossary’s will be shared so other teachers can use these as well.
Long term effects
There are multiple long term effects:
- Lentiz | LIFE College is even more equipped to prepare their pupils for the international context in which they will live and for their expected future jobs in the trade business with German companies.
- The quality of the lessons in the German language and culture classes are heightened, which is ensured in the sections of the subject.
- The Lentiz education group vision regarding internationalisation is strengthened.
