Professional development for Europe in the move
Start date: Nov 30, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Amalie Skram offers a wide range of subjects within sciences and social studies in the general curriculum. We are the most technologically advanced school in Norway which also offers subjects as drama, sports, media, dance, music, science and technology. Our students can create prototypes and print them in our 3D printers. More than thousand students from the ages of 16 to 19 years old attend the school. We offer a wide range of second languages as English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. Apart from general studies Amalie Skram also offers vocational courses. Amalie Skram is the first university school in the region of Hordaland. The school library is available from early in the morning until after school hours offering individual tutoring in different subjects. The challenge for our school is that we cannot learn from other schools in the region. Unfortunately there are not other similar schools in our region when it comes to size and variety of study programs. None of us are used to teach groups of 32 to 33 students. There is an extra need to find a wider range of practices to cope with our real needs and challenges. The objectives of the project are to offer the possibility of professional development that the staff needs according to the organization’s philosophy and the students’ needs. After mapping the different needs of the staff in the organization we know that the management is interested in learning more about university schools and about closer cooperation between university, local educational authorities and enterprises. The language teachers want to immerge in schools abroad to improve the foreign language they teach and to acquire innovative teaching methods. The science teachers will attend courses where they can learn more about technology and researching. Technology and science research is a new subject in our school without a text book or any other teaching materials. The social science teachers will observe new ways of teaching in complete different societies where religion, gender and culture have a very strong influence. The exchange of teachers will contribute to their professional development and to enhance the organization's quality of learning and practice. Our organization has a development plan including projects of action research. The management of the school means that in order to develop the quality of our organization we need to put focus in professional development by evaluating, reflecting and improving classroom practices. In order to evaluate our own practices we need to learn from others. Our teachers are organized in small groups with different developing plans. The different groups with a mentor have common action research projects that will be shared during the progress and the final results in groups with the same topics and subjects first and for the rest of the organization in common meetings. We consider important to implement the strategic development plan in all the levels in the organization in order to establish common quality standards. We wish to develop an innovative culture of sharing across subjects and study programs. We have developed a sharing platform where the teachers and management can share their action research results and different tools other teachers can use in their lessons. We have plans to start a group that will be responsible for developing internationalization in the school. The group members will have representatives from the teachers, the management and the students. Some of the participants in the mobility grants will become a part of the internationalization group. E-twinning will be implemented in the next phase of our project in Erasmus + partnerships projects. We will encourage the mobility participants to share their experience in our compulsory and flexible study-time to fulfill the needs of our students. We believe that our students’ results will improve even though we have big groups if their learning needs can be met in a more personalized way by implementing new ways of organizing the school day. At the local, regional and national level we hope that our project can contribute to develop and share best practices from the different experiences. We hope that our results, conclusions and new knowledge will enrich our school, the different project communities and our students.During and after the project period we hope that Amalie Skram's close cooperation with the various university faculties and other stakeholders will hopefully enrich the quality of the students' outcomes and the teachers' keeping up-to-date knowledge. Our school’s philosophy is to improve the incoming grades of our students during their education in our school we also hope that the project will help to adapt the teaching and learning methods individually to our students’ needs in order to get the best outcomes. We also wish to develop an organization with friendly open-minded attitudes and behaviors towards Europe.
