Preparing for Sustainable Work in Art & Design, Food Preparation, and Supporting Teaching and Learning: Wolverhampton-Brescia
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Wolverhampton Adult Education Service strives to help young adults learn employable skills and develop behaviour and attitudes that will best equip them to enter the job market. Several areas of Wolverhampton are marked by high levels of deprivation and the city has suffered severely during the recent economic crisis. In this climate many young people and those suffering from job loss in mid-life despair and lose motivation. They are unaware of opportunities that exist through collaboration in Europe to build a better future for themselves, seeing other Europeans come to Wolverhampton seeking to improve their lives but feeling excluded from this type of mobility themselves. This exciting project will provide an opportunity for young adults to gain first hand experience of working in their chosen field in the economically buoyant region of Lombardy in Italy. It will also offer a change of direction for older job seekers. They will be supported by an organization based in Brescia, Mistral, that is experienced in working with disadvantaged youth and passionate about looking after the environment. The project aims to provide 45 students in the fields of Art and Design, Food Preparation, Youth Work Practice and Supporting Teaching and Learning the chance to learn new skills in Italy and thereby inspire creativity, innovation and confidence. Participants will also benefit from learning about the environmental impact of economic activity while on their placement in the Lombardy region and this should increase a sense of responsibility in looking after our natural resources. They will follow a wide ranging programme, both in Wolverhampton and Brescia, that will encompass the following elements: learning to speak basic Italian and use it both socially and in the workplace; learning specialist techniques for work; developing a positive approach in the workplace including good self presentation, communication and reliability; raising their awareness of health and safety at work through workshops; through a process of reflection and evaluation, increasing their autonomy as life-long learners; taking part in motivational visits to centres of excellence in their field; establishing friendships and working relations with individuals and organizations that will outlast the life of the project. The project will not only make the individual participants stand out in the job market but will also help the partner organizations develop new working practices. Success stories from the project will be widely promoted to prompt other businesses and organizations to get involved with work experience programmes and open up the doors to European wide communication and cooperation.
