In 2015 Zespół Szkół Ekonomicznych im. ks. J.St.Pasierba in Tczew realised a project titled: Practical placements abroad as a way of gaining new experience and opportunities at the job market, co-financed by the European Union under the European Social Fund, Knowledge Education Development European Funds (PO WER). The main aim of the project was to enable to obtain skills in forming key competences for economics technician, to gain professional experience, to develop English language skills: oral and written, in order to increase students’ chances for employment in competitive job market. The participants of the project were two groups of female and male students of Zespół Szkół Ekonomicznych in Tczew, learning in a profesion of economics technician – 32 students altogether. Participants recruited from Tczew and towns and villages in neghbouring counties, as one of the aims of the project was to equalize the chances of young people from such places. Tellus Group Ltd from Plymouth (Great Britain) was our partner institution. The participants did their 3-week work experience in companies in Plymouth, Great Britain. Each group consisted of 16 students, as it was planned in the project the girls made up at least 50% of each group. However, since in our school the boys comprise minority of the students, we put special effort to encourage them to participate in the project, with a positive result: 9 boys took part in work experience abroad. The work experience took place in companies in Plymouth in April/May 2015 (1st group, students from 3rd grades) and in August 2015 (2nd group, students from 2nd grades). Before the work experience, all students participated in preparatory courses organized at our school. The courses included 30 hours of English language course, 5 hours of cultural preparation and 5 hours of psychological workshops. As it was mentioned before, the aim of the work experience was to obtain competences facilitating finding employment in a competitive job market. In this aspect the goal has been achieved: during the work experience the participants were able to improve their professional competences and learn the European standards of organization and functioning of the companies. The practical placements also served the opportunity to learn about British market mechanisms. Thanks to the participation in the project the students established international contacts, which for some of the participants resulted in receiving the references from British employers and offers of future employment. Additionally, participation in the project and practical placement in Great Britain developed students’ competences in English language in natural environment. In their reports students stressed that their usage of English language improved. Stay in Plymouth also served the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the region and Great Britain, thanks to the preparatory course (before the work experience) and organized trips (during the stay in Great Britain). The experience gained during the practical placements abroad positively influenced development of participants’ soft skills such as ability to adapt to the new situation, teamwork and improvement communication skills. Upon finishing of practical placement participants shared their experience with other students and teachers from our school. Each participant prepared a presentation about their work experience. The information about the project and its results were presented to school community, parents, local community and employers. The results of the project manageable to present in numbers are as follow: 100% of participants did their work experience in Great Britain, 100% of participants participated in a preparatory English language course, 100% of participants took part in a preparatory cultural and psychological workshop and took part in a cultural program in Great Britain, 100% of participants received Europass Mobility document, 100% of participants received certificates confirming the participation in work experience in Great Britain. Participation in this and previous projects also developed potential of international cooperation of the employees of our school. The experience in realization of the projects has helped us in cooperation with a new partner from Portugal and enabled us to organize work experience in Lisbon in 2016.
