Start date: Nov 1, 2009,
PELLIC (Practice Enterprise for Language Learning & Intercultural Communication) will combine the expertise of six partners in Finland,Great Britain,Germany,Spain and Czech Republic. It is an English language project focusing on English as lingua franca and on intercultural communication. Today's work force needs practical language and intercultural skills relevant to workplace to enhance European competitiveness. The project integrates tertiary level, advanced and continuing vocational as well as lifelong language learning into authentic multicultural working life and business context and increases the motivation for language learning whatever age the learners are. Practice Enterprise (PE) pedagogy is the guiding concept from survey research to language learning design and implementation to evaluation and it serves as cohesive force for the entire language learning and training approach.Until this PE has been applied to business studies, however PELLIC approached it from language learning perspective.PE offers an environment for authentic intercultural contacts in language learning and serves as European level language network. For this purpose the project aims to create PE context into open source virtual language learning environment (VLE) where reciprocal student groups working in companies study English e.g. by planning company web page, sending electronic newsletters, mails, making calls, sending business letters, arranging virtual meetings.Project partners also create viable, self sustaining practices for future users of PELLIC to find mentor companies to offer models of modern business activities needed in PE language studies. PELLIC project creates a virtual PE language learning environment in English, teacher’s support material to support adaptation of results in other European languages, teacher training and academic articles and seminars that will be of interest aimed at European language teaching and learning communities tertiary level and lifelong.
