Podniesienie efektywności nauczania języka angielskiego
Start date: Dec 31, 2014, End date: Dec 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

It is a mobility project for school education staff. The applicant organisation is a general secondary school from Milanówek. Poland. The partner organisation is a course provider which offers professional training for ELF teachers. The project is titled "Increasing ELT Effectiveness" and it is aimed at raising the level of EFL teaching at school. At present the school has 370 students who learn English in 13 classes. More than 90% of the total number of graduates pass their final secondary school examinations (which are called matura in Poland). The average results from 2013 English matura exams at the basic level were better than in the whole country but they dropped by 2% in comparison with the previous year. However, last year the average results from the extended level were worse than those of the whole country. The school has been organising an English language contest for local schools for 5 years now. It covers general knowledge about Ireland. The majority of participants always come from other local schools. The organization has its own European Development Plan, outlining its weak sides which need to be improved and it specifies main objectives for the years 2014-19. The significant part in the Plan is played by the continuation of the already existing international cooperation and increasing the rank of the humanities - and the English language is among them - the subject chosen by more than 90% of graduates for their matura exam. That is why the subject plays a cardinal role at school. The applicant wants to improve its results from secondary school leaving examinations. As far as English is concerned, it is necessary to maintain the current tendency at the basic level and to improve the results at the extended level. it is also necessary to prepare a new richer offer of educational classes and to encourage students to take part in contests. The participants of the project are to be EFL teachers who will take part in four mobilities - i. e. professional development courses in Great Britain from 1 July 2014 till 30 June 2016. They have decided initially that the partner institution will be the University of Edinburgh which has a wide range of courses fulfilling their in-service training expectations. Some of them include: updating knowledge in the field of ELT methodology, combining teaching all four language skills and becoming familiar with the current trends in ELT. It is also very important for them to broaden and update the knowledge of the English language. The same is about the need to broaden and update the culture knowledge of the English-speaking countries. One of the suggested courses is devoted to pronunciation and it is held in the language laboratory. Participants of the course become familiar with modern teaching methods. The course combines three issues: theory, practice and specific points for work on pronunciation in the classroom and the language laboratory. The teachers find it important to have interesting and beneficial classes and the culture programme of the course to be as varied as possible. The participants of the project will be chosen by a specifically appointed body which will work on the basis of the known criteria. The most important criteria are: qualifications for teaching the subject, the number of years at the post of the EFL teacher and the degree in the professional promotion. As a result of the in-service training, the teachers will develop their own knowledge of the English language as well as the knowledge about ELT methodology. They will make new additions to their experience and practice. The organisation will be able to pride itself on new teaching methods, richer educational offer and exceptionally qualified staff. The participants will be able to share their experience and acquired knowledge with a neighbouring school. (Two schools cooperate with each other during matura exams). The same applies to other teachers from middle and secondary schools. They are planning that young people from school will primarily be the main target group . They wish the courses they are going to attend could cause long-term effects in the field of teaching students (e. g. new teaching methods, better exam results, better pronunciation). They will also become familiar with the history, culture and architecture of the city and the country which their teachers will visit (PowerPoint presentations). It will broaden their philosophy of life and knowledge about English-speaking countries. Presentations will also be shown to other teachers from a local school. During the selection procedure, headteachers will choose several lessons and they will carry out observations. After the participants come back to Poland, they will observe an open lesson which will be based on innovative methods. In addition, PowerPoint presentations will be used to test knowledge about Great Britain. Finally, conclusions from the whole project will be drawn and analysed.
