PROJECT
FINISHED
The project is carried out by Pilgrims Ltd, in Canterbury, United Kingdom. They organise various courses in the field of English language teaching, and it is meant for teacher from different fields who would like to improve their level of English, connect with other teachers from all aorund Europe, gain new knowledge in the field of teaching and get to know the British society and their culture better. Pilgrims carries out these courses throughout the year. We want to send two of oour teachers to their course. One of them is an English teacher and would llike to attend a course on British life and culture, because this is a topic that is often present in the English language classroom, and it can be hard to talk about it if most of your information comes only from books and the internet. She would also like to spend time among native speakers of English to improve her level of the language and see the current changes in the language. The other participant we want to send to their course is a teacher of lower grades of primary school who is also a mentor of our school folklore group. She would like to gain some new knowledge in the field of art, music and language teaching that she could use in her classroom as well as with her folklore group. She also has a plan to get a certificate to teach English in the lower grades of primary school and this experience could help her a lot with this.
Our participants would attend the coourse between 20th July and 2nd August. One of the would attend a course on British life and culture, where they would deal withe the following topics:
• Issues of class and gender in British society
• Youth culture
• Changes in education and their effects on parents, teachers and children
• The changing world of work
• UK facts and figures
• The shadow side of English culture, crime, subculture and the needy
• Stereotypes of Britain and the British - how true are they?
• Multiculturalism in Britain
• The relation between language and culture
• Political correctness
• UK humour
Our other participant would attend a course on teaching language through music and art, where they would deal with the following topics:
• Using art as a stimulus for task based learning and integrated skills teaching
• Putting life into course book exercises and filling in the gaps often missing in the course book content
• Using music as an aid to classroom management and for working with different levels of energy throughout the day
• Integrating the use the arts to enable more effective learning with “difficult” or unmotivated students.
• Using music to enhance areas of learning such as pronunciation, vocabulary, and fluency practice
• Using art and music as a basis for storytelling, drama and movement
• Introductions to one or more of the following approaches to teaching and learning: Multiple Intelligence, Task Based Learning and Suggestopaedia
We expect to get some new useful knowledge from this course, which we can later use in our woork. Our participants will pass their experiences to the rest of their co-workers who can then also implement these methods into their work and in this way motivate their students better. In the long run, we hope to get more motivated students and with this a better atmosphere in class and in our school in general.
