Pilgrims Course

From August 2014 all groups of the Merkelbach school have got English twice a week from their group teacher with course books and digiboard lessons of Groove Me and Take it Easy. The Early English implemtation project started in school year 2014-2015 with a compulsory language training English at the University of Amsterdam based on a compulsory language proficiency test for all teachers to assess their CEF level. The target is that all teachers attain the B2 level for all four language skills and to ensure that all pupils attain the A1/A2 level in a dynamic growth model. In addition, five training sessions were organised for the whole team to train the team in the field of language teaching competences, given by an experienced language trainer from June 2014-June 2015. The school principal and Early English committee have had many meetings with the language trainer to support the team and to make school agreements about teaching English. The Pilgrims course in Many 2016 will ensure that all= 15 teachers including school counsellor and school principal wll have a substantial impact on improving their language and teaching skills, improve their ability to meet individual learners' needs and to deal with the social, cultural and linguistic diverstiy of their school population, contribute to develop new approaches, ideas and materials, improve their competences to manage the Early English implementation, further professionalise their methodology from the perspective of young learners, to integrate a European dimension in their school education and have impact on the learning process of the pupils. The expected impact and outcome of the project Methodolgy & Language for Primary Teacher will be both high quality learning outcome for teachers as well as pupils, inspiration and creativity in designing language activities in addition to our course materials of Groove Me and Take it Easy, improving Classroom English, develop ideas to realise a European and international dimension in language training in order to develop international awareness of our pupils, getting more ideas about methodology and materials like attractive games, songs, chants, rhymes and drama activities and extend our English materials stock, improve the teachers' confidence and awareness of langauge proficiency and hence the pupils confidence in their speaking and writing skills, teambuilding and more intensive co-operation with partner schools and the Early English Amsterdam network organised by the municipality of Amsterdam. By organising teacher training sessions, team meetings, lesson visits by the English coordinator and feedback to the team before and after the Pilgrims course in which we will assess, evaluate and ensure the impact and dessemination of the course outcome, discuss to which extent the expectations of the individual team members have been met, share course material, ideas from the course to give the course a long-term multiplier effect and sustainable effect both within the school and within our Early English network. Within the newly started Amsterdam network for schools which give Early English education, bilingual education and organise international awareness projects, we will make sure this Pilgrims Course project results will be shared and disseminated.
