Within the implementation of the Project it is planned to have exchange of experience for:- four dog handling officials (instructors) of the State Border Guard college and State Border Guard of Latvia in border stations of Lithuanian State Border Guard service, on European Union external border, also in Dog handling center;- two dog handling officials (instructors) of the State Border Guard college and State Border Guard of Latvia in border stations of Finnish Border Guard , on European Union external border.The goal of the project is to promote the improvement of professional skills and competencies of dog handlers of the State Border Guard of Latvia, getting acquainted with dog handler's and dog's training methods of Border Guarding institutions of Lithuania and Finland and their experience in using service dogs in border guarding activities and preventative measures of illegal immigration. Main subject of visit is to observe process of patrolling, searching for illegal immigrants and to train dogs for this task.The implementation of the project is necessary in order to strengthen the capacity of Dog Handling Service of the State Border Guard of Latvia, to promote the cooperation among the Latvian and the European Union border guarding institutions in dog handling issues as well as to approximate the work abilities and standards of service dogs’ usage. The implementation of the project largely is possible due to “Guidelines for service dog handling””. These guidelines were worked out in 2009 as a result of FRONTEX working group (26 EU MS and 8 FRONTEX working agreement states participants including the representative of the State Border Guard of Latvia). As a result of the project the Sate Border Guard of Latvia shall get an invaluable experience in combating and prevention of illegal immigration thus in the future the security of the European Union and more efficient combating of emerging illegal immigration threats.
