Personalized Medicine & What will it bring in the future?
Start date: Sep 20, 2014, End date: Mar 19, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project event took place in Ankara, Turkey between Feb 21-28 2015 hosting by Hacettepe University Faculty of Pharmacy Students Group (AHUPS) and participation with Societatea Studentilor in Farmacie Bucuresti (SSFB), Studentu Farmacininku Draugija (SFD) and Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Students Association (BPSA). The medical community have adopted traditional treatments so far and the different responses by different people to the same treatments were discovered. However, we are, now in this genomic era, able to obtain the genetic map which provides us with a common idea concerning the personal diseases and accordingly helps us identifying the specific risks. A genetic map represents the sequence in which the genes are put together, and the genetic profile helps doctors to predict the illnesses that may appear and thus, they may decide upon the preventative medicine. These genetic map examinations renders diagnose and prescription easier. In due course, however, personalized medicine has proved to be a promising field. The personalized medicine is employed in order to minimize the adverse reactions and to obtain more successful results. This type of medicine prevents the overuse of medicines while minimizing the expenses. Adopting the right dose and right medicine is very important. This is why the individual needs of patients for medicines have been started to be customized. This strategy will be widely used for the mostly seen diseases like Diabetes, Alzheimer and Cancer. Through personalized medicine, such diseases are generally diagnosed before they become chronic in the patient. According to this field, the targeted system for drug development has showed improvement recently. In addition to preventing potential diseases, by way of the human genome project, knowing a patient's genetic profile conduces to proper usage of medicines at appropriate doses by doctors and accordingly more promising results are about to be obtained through this project which has been highly appreciated. In consideration of these factors, EPEMED (the European personalized medicine association) which is a European association was established in 2009. The aim of this association is to reach a good sense for personalized medicine and to present the reason why this field is so important to study on and the strategies that may be employed for spreading this type of treatment, re-imbursements of diagnostic tests, optimizing the results. Personalized medicine is one of the research are of BIO (biotechnology Industry Organization) which is the greatest biotechnology trading association of the world. In addition, the group who works on this area is the PMC group (Personalized Medicine Coalition) members of whom are scientists, patients, providers and financiers who aims at contributing to the improvement of health system. In addition, a symposium about personalized medicine was already held on April 29, 2013 in Marmara University, Turkey. The spokesperson in the said symposium mentioned to the genetic factors' positive effects on therapeutical outcomes. It seems more possible that doctors, in the long term, will be able to screen the genetic map and other related molecular variations and accordingly, adopt the particular medicines effortlessly. During the event we focused on personalized medicine and yields in the future supported with presentations of specialist on this area. We visited some worthy places such as An?tkabir, Ankara Castle, Old Parliament etc. and organized campus activities during the week. Those who participate in the project had a chance to taste our traditional foods and drinks. The participant students left in satisfied for participating to such a large-scaled project which include scientific platforms and the multi-cultural activities.
