Pathways to Adult Education for People with Intellectual Disabilities
Start date: Oct 1, 2007,

For people with intellectual disabilities, lifelong learning is not only about learning new skills, it is about being included in society, being able to represent themselves and being able to take control of their daily lives and their future. Adult education is especially important for this group of learners yet one of the main barriers is a lack of accessible adult training material. Bringing together partners from 9 European countries, the Pathways project aimed to address this through developing accessible, easy-to-read material for use with and by persons with intellectual disabilities. Beginning with little common ground, partners initially worked to establish a set of European standards, beyond which materials were developed and tested, the latter directly involving target beneficiaries. Beyond materials development, partners actively considered the quality assurance of future materials development and the training of adult education staff in preparing such materials. The materials developed by the Pathways project continue to be used by those working with adults with intellectual disabilities.
