ParticipAID : breaking boundaries. Youth with and without handicap from Uganda and The Netherlands work on their future!
Start date: Mar 1, 2011,

Sending organisation Stichting Commundo offers 20 youngsters from the Netherlands the opportunity to do voluntary work in Uganda, by doing activities with youngsters in Uganda. Half of the group Dutch volunteers will be physically handicapped youngsters. By sending disabled youngsters, we give these youngsters with fewer opportunities the chance to develop themselves and have this international experience.Host organisation Kampala School for Physcially Handicapped (KSPH) educates, rehabilitates, and equips physically handicapped children for self-reliance and development in Uganda. The Dutch volunteers will organise workshops for the pupils of the KSPH. Also activities will be done with non-handicapped youngsters in Uganda, organized by Kawempe Youth Centre (KYC). KYC is a not-for-profit organization with a vision of "building literate communities". In promoting education, KYC provides library services, computer training as well as children's activities, mainly for unpriviliedged youth. The main objective is to gain more understanding and cooperation between disabled youngsters and youngsters without a handicap in The Netherlands and Uganda. The experiences of these EVS activities will have a deep impact on the lifes of all young people involved and we are convinced that this project generates positive effect on their perception of participation of disabled people, and the importance of fighting youth unemployment. Also the objective is to enlarge the personal and social development of both the Dutch and the Ugandan youngsters and to give rise to their mutual interest in two themes: Disability and Youth Unemployment. Two groups of 10 volunteers will go to Uganda for 15 days. They will do two kind of activities:Empowerment Activities for the physically handicapped children of KSPH. Dealing with a disability and discussing about possible ways to participate in society. These activities will be diverse, like dialogue groups between Dutch and Ugandan youngsters, workshops organised by and involving Dutch and Ugandan youngsters. Creative activities and sport activities. Each activity has a separate theme, like how to deal with discrimination of being disabled, importance of education, millennium development goals, climate change.Activities with non-handicapped youngsters from KYC Youth Centre. The theme of these activities is youth unemployment. Also discrimination of disabled people will be discussed and participation in society in general. With these activities, we want to bring together disabled youngsters and youngsters without a handicap in Uganda. This is really special, because normally youngsters in Uganda don't meet handicapped peers. Disabled people live quite isolated in Uganda. We hope by initiating these activities, more understanding will be created that having an handicap doesn't mean you are not part of the society. Unemployment is a severe problem in Uganda, no matter if your handicapped or not, so therefor this is a topic that can bring the groups together. We stimulate all youngsters involved to be more self-confident about their talents and that they can realise their dreams regarding future job opportunity.
