Oyster Project 4
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Oyster Project 4 consisted of a two-week mobility project to Paphos, Cyprus in April 2016 to our host partner The Hair and Beauty Academy. This project intended to develop the participants’ skills sets, including enhancing vocational competence with pan-European techniques and transferable skills. The project participants consisted of a group of two accompanying staff members and 15 learners aged between 16 and 24, all of whom were working towards one of the below government-funded apprenticeship programmes (as outlined within the initial application form); -NVQ level 2 Hairdressing Foundation Apprenticeship Training Programme -NVQ level 3 Hairdressing, Advanced Apprenticeship Training Programme. For the duration of the stay the initial visit planner was worked towards. The participants attended workshops, arranged by the host organisation, for 3 days each week along with working in commercial hair salons across the region for the remainder of their stay. This mixture of workshops and industry based experiences enabled participants to not only learn new vocational and transferable skills but also to experience the culture of Cyprus and adapt to the different working practices compared to the UK. The projects aims and objectives where as follows; Specific aim: To enhance the learning experience for all participants, enthusing and motivating learners to stretch themselves, realising that the world is their Oyster, whilst supporting the learners’ journey to visualize their ultimate career aims and develop entrepreneurial skills. Excepted visit outcomes for participants 1. Demonstrate new technical vocational skills to their peers and their organisation enabling them to diversify the services that can be offered in their workplace, thus increasing productivity through staff being competent in more European hair types and technique 2. Improve their communication skills, even where language is a barrier 3. Have more self confidence to diversify their careers outside the 'norm' of a salon environment and improve entrepreneurship skills 4. Gain additional qualifications from the City and Guilds, Employability suite of qualifications 5. Disseminate their experiences to others, outlining the benefits of mobility visits 6. Have an enhanced CV to increase future job prospects. We envisage that this project will impact at many levels including participant, sectorial, regional and national. Where the objectives achieved? Participants feedback gathered as part of their distance travelled questionnaires, Oyster Evaluations, work diaries and discussions all clearly demonstrate the achievement of the objectives set as part of this project and with the participants learning agreements. For more information please see appendix 1, infographic. Longer term benefits will require on-going measurements however we envisage this to consist of the participants becoming more involved in enrichment opportunities due to increased confidence levels. This will in turn continue to enhance participants employability skills and CV's.
