Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project is meant for the -an estimated 18- pupils of Sense ELV (Secondary after Secondary Aesthetic Body Care), for the pupils of the 7th grade -probably 17 students- Hairstylist, and for the 10 students from the 6th year Office and Communication (OC). These students are students of our school DvM htb in Aalst. The pupils of Sense ELV and the 7th grade Hairstylist go for an internship to Madeira for 3 weeks. The pupils of OC go on an internship for 2 weeks to France. This project is part of the educational project of our school DvM htb "Across borders". We want to give our students the opportunity to go abroad to sharpen their professional skills. This way we also hope to bring Europe a lot closer to our school and the students to stimulate their European identity. In addition, we want to inform our partner about Flanders/Belgium. An important aspect within the project is consolidating the language and professional skills of the participants. We aim with the project to strengthen their independence and sense of self-confidence. The pupils of Sense ELV do an internship in renowned spas in Madeira. They perform the tasks of a beautician in a spa and learn to work within a multidisciplinary team. Also disciplines as sales, organising the workshedule, stock management, ... are on the list of work activities. The pupils of 7 Hairstylist do an internship in hairdressing salons also in Madeira. They perform all the tasks that one needs to perform in a hairdressing salon: the reception, recieving customers, realize hairstyles, stock management. The sale is an important part in a hair salon, and this skill is also expected of our students. The salons are selected based on a previous project. These salons are often small businesses but with a wide customer database so that the participants have sufficient opportunities to practice their skills. In addition to the internship the 7e grade Hairstylist work for 3 days along with the school DRQP from Madeira . The pupils of Sense ELV work during 1 day together with the pupils of DRQP. During these cooperation days we will make time to indicate who we are, where Belgium and Flanders are situated and how our school system works. During those days we also exchange techniques and we practise together.During the weekends we do cultural visits and we try to visit 1 company related to the study of the participants. The pupils visit each other’s internships. The pupils of OC do an internship at the secretary of various companies or agencies. They perform all kinds of tasks in relation to their future possible job; this can be at the reception, sales, administrative or commercial services of both private companies, public services or administrations. The current internationalization of these settings require that the students are bilingual or even multilingual, especially in the Belgian context where the control of the second national language is a must. During this internship the pupils are fully immersed in the French language, directly linked to the secretarial practice. An internship in a Francophone context also seems to us to be the ideal way to respond on the ever increasing demand for management assistants who can communicate fluently in French.Afterwards as many people as possible are informed about our project. We organize a day where parents, trainee places from Flanders, teachers of our own school and from other schools, education managers and people of the professional associations are invited. All aspects of the project will be shown by the students themselves. Furthermore, we write an article for the newspaper, the digital newsletter of the school, which is spread in over 2000 mails and the project can also be found through a link on our website. We would like to be a school where students come for the sake of the European experience they can get with us. We want to continue this "European" path because we are convinced of the great added value for the pupils, the school and all its employees. It broadens horizons, brings people within Europe closer together and creates additional opportunities for participants to a career or to further studies.
