To expose the primary school to European cultural diversity Primary school La Font de l’arbe, in Orcines, welcomes 228 students from ages 3 to 10, spread among 9 different classes. The school is situated in the suburbs of Clermont-Ferrand. Orcines is at the heart of the “Chaîne des Puys—Faille de Limagne” area, which is a candidate for inscription on the UNESCO world heritage list. This area is a draw for tourists, undeniably from all around Europe.We wish that each student develop a curiosity and desire to discover the European Union, other languages, and other cultures. Our goal is also to help each student shape him or herself as a European citizen, with respect for others and an open mind.For four years, English teaching has been a part of all elementary classes and English discovery has been fostered in the three nursery school classes at our school. This year, the whole teaching staff would like to add a new dimension to the school’s project. For the school’s nine classes, five teachers would like to participate in a training course on English teaching method and linguistics. This training will allow the teachers to reinforce their practical English skills as well as to improve their English teaching method for their students. The teachers will also be able to gain consciousness of the differences among European education systems. Over the course of two weeks in Edinburgh, the participants will better comprehend British culture. They will be immersed in the daily lives of Scottish families. During their stay, the teachers will have regular exchanges with their students and their colleagues. The requested mobility grants will motivate and aid the teachers in vitalizing their students’ English language practice. It will also allow for the initiation of scholarly exchanges between European schools. These intercultural exchanges will be facilitated through the use of the eTwinning platform. Additionally, the teachers will involve themselves locally with other schools in their region by participating in English Days (a meet-up of nearby schools), which is organized by the Pedagogical Counselors for Foreign Languages. Each trimester, at the school board meeting involving the town’s mayor as well as parent representatives, the involved teachers will provide a report of the project’s development. The impact of the project will be discussed with teachers from the area’s secondary school at three primary-secondary school advisory meetings.We wish that in the years to come, all of our students will succeed in obtaining an English level of A1 as defined by the Common European Framework.
