Our shared sea: mechanisms of ecosystem change in the western Channel (MARINEXUS)
Start date: Aug 31, 2008, End date: Dec 30, 2013 PROJECT  FINISHED

The MARINEXUS project aims to reduce adverse effects of human activity on marine ecosystems and to encourage the sustainable development in the Channel area. Indeed, the Channel is faced to many environmental issues associated to the development of various activities in marine areas. To do this, the project partners plan to implement a sustainable environmental policy, based on a sound scientific understanding of the ecosystems in the Channel area. The principal objective of this project is to create a cross-channel network of research structures working on the changes related to human activity within coastal and open water ecosystems in the western Channel. It will also disseminate its results to the general public (schools but also stakeholders, local authorities, charities etc.).Main actions :- Observation and monitoring of the Western Channel ecosystems- Study of climate change, artificial habitats and biological invasions : impacts on population and community functioning- Study of endogenous marine organisms of the Western Channel in a changing environment- Increasing awareness of the general public and schoolchildren regarding the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems in the Western Channel Achievements: Involve students and schools in scientific projects, this was one of the challenges taken up by the MARINEXUS project, which developed effective methods to raise awareness among young people. As part of the MARINEXUS project, three Bioblitz, 24-hour events involving scientists, the public and experts were held in England, enabling the marine and terrestrial species in a designated area to be identified. Subsequently, species identification guides were developed by the students based on the data collected. A Marinexus bus, fitted out as a mobile laboratory for observing marine environments was also created in reference to the project.
