Our School Meets Europe!
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Our School Meets Europe!" provided the ability for the school staff of the 10th Gymnasio Irakliou to broaden their horizon beyond the local boundaries with the ultimate aim of improving the operation and learning process for the benefit of themselves and all members of the school and mainly of students. In an increasingly challenging school environment with new demands, the project achieved to provide all members of the school unit incentives to become better through the demonstration, implementation and evaluation of best management practices, communication, collaboration and teaching. Better means for managers that they are able to utilize successful organizational ideas and formulas for personnel management, organization and communication that are developed abroad and especially in one of the most successful education systems, Finland. Better means for teachers that they could implement innovative practices in the educational process, well equipped when confronting pupils, with more intercultural and European conscience and technophobia-free. Best means for students that they are more active members of the school community with an interest in exploiting new practices with agreeable curiosity for new things and cooperation with more qualified teachers and with a sense of European identity. 4 teachers (amongst a Headmaster and a Vice Headmaster) participated in the field of administration and organization of the school unit and their profiles were individuals who own or aim to positions of responsibility, with enough teaching experience, knowledge of English language and communication techniques. 9 teachers participated (in 2 times 4 and 5 persons) in the field of training teachers to use new technologies and the use of innovative teaching practices and their profiles were people with knowledge of the English language, familiarity with new technologies, motivation for improvement and dissemination of results. Briefly the activities implemented were: - Participation of headquarter staff in seminars of effective school management via the use of good practices from abroad and highly successful education systems like Finland. - Participation of teachers in seminars (in Turkey and Italy) in order to integrate new practices in teaching, targeted to new technologies, but also to make contact with teachers from other countries and visits to schools abroad. - Parallel participation of teachers and students in European programs as E-Twinning for European integration of consciousness in all aspects of school life. For the implementation of the project there was initially a direct briefing of the school community and the local community about the program objectives from the school's website and social networks but also from the special website for the project (http://ourschoolmeetseurope.oo.gd). Then there was a clear selection with the assistance of the School Councilor and the Parents' Board and preparation of the participants before the mobilities (E-Twinning registration, EuroPass CVs and presentations). Afterwards, needs and expectations from the project were stated in order to have prepared participants to adress their need to the hosting organizations and evaluation methods of the project were implemented before, during and after the mobilities with the use of questionnaires and interviews. Focus was on implementation of new practices in the school routine and dissemination of results (Internet, Social Media, Local Newspapers, meetings) in order to have the desired impact on our school, students, parents and anyone whom it may concern. Thus, for instance, we changed the way of communicating with parents for gradesand other matters, we created and operated a new Computer Lab exclusively for subjects other than ICT, modernized the School Library, used mobile devices for more active participation of student in learning by questionnaires and by creating quizzes and organized visits to museums and outdoor excursions with QR codes to implement a game of treasure hunt. The main benefit of this project is the initiation of all "pillars" of our school in order to become a place where students will find the best education and cooperation to prevent school dropouts, and the staff utilizes the ever-improving technology and building hardware and will act more and more through good cooperation with the administration in a new more European environment. The school year after the end of this project brings our school in front of new challenges like the realization of new Erasmus+ European Programs , a two-year KA1 and a three-year KA2 with adequately skilled teachers
