PROJECT
FINISHED
City youth council Maribor prepared a project with title 'Young voices of Maribor' during which two meetings between young people and decision-makers in year 2015 will unfold with the purpose of establishing permanent dialogue between them. A need for this project comes from the fact that the local environment is facing low political participation, social exclusion and apathy of young people which is resulting in shaping of youth policies which do not fit the needs of young people, questionability of democratic functioning and increased exclusion of young people from society.
The project will bring together 30 young people and decision-makers in a safe and democratic environment where young people will be able to make their voices heard in the making of youth policies. Organizer of the project will follow the goals of increased democratic participation, development of local advocacy and raising EU awareness.
First local meeting will be conducted in April 2015 and will be focused on active participation of local youth in improving existing local youth policies. During the event young people will be educated on their rights, revise the Local youth programme 2015-2020, express their opinions on it and then share it with decision-makers present. Result of the event will be a formulation of consents which the City Municipality of Maribor will be able to use for policy-making.
Second local meeting will happen in October 2015 and will be dedicated to active participation of local youth in shaping new local actions. Organizer will be conducting an opinion poll beforehand with which it will attain the voices of wider youth population and use its findings as a basis for determining most problematized areas that did not get attention in the existing local youth policies. During the event young people will also express their opinions on development of local youth advocacy. Result of the event will be a formulation of consents which the City Municipality of Maribor will be able to use for policy-making and City Youth Council Maribor for development plans in the advocacy field.
In the evening activitites, young people will learn about mobility programmes funded by EU through peer-to-peer learning and about the process of Structured dialogue on European level.
The project will include minimum 30 young people from local environment, coming from different background, relevant number of youth organisations, City municipality of Maribor, Employment service of Republic of Slovenia and Slovenian youth council. Young people involved will be long-term unemployed, members of Roma ethnic group, students, pupils of middle schools, young artists, athletics, volunteers and socially excluded. Project will be supported with process of non-formal learning, methods of youth work, moderation, facilitation, research and analysis, all young participants will get a Youthpass certificate.
Project will have longterm impacts on everyone involved. Local youth will be more activated for political participation and EU topics, they will get new knowledge and information, enhance their employability prospects, raise their cultural awareness and be more actively involved in the society. City Municipality of Maribor and City youth council Maribor will receive opinions of youth about changes in local environment, cooperation between youth organisations will be strengthened. Because of disseminating activities to the national level, the project can serve as a good practice example for development of local youth councils.
