For a few years now, we've been preparing a bilingual department at pre-university level at our school, the Merletcollege in Cuijk, the Netherlands. In August 2014 we will start bilingual education in the first form (pre-university level). The bilingual education team has been assembled and the teachers who will teach in the bilingual groups are being trained for the CAE exam. In order to motivate and inspire the teachers, and improve their English language skills we would like to go on a study trip to Kent, England. We will follow a professional development course for teachers at Hilderstone College. The aims of the course are: - Develop participants' language skills, both speaking (fluency) and grammatical development. - Raise participants' awareness of approaches and methodologies in content and language integrated teaching (CLIL). - Develop participants' confidence and ability to use English for teaching bilingual classes - Develop participants' knowledge about the English language and culture. The participants are 14 subject teachers in different fields of learning (History, Geography, Biology, Religious Studies, Economics, Physical Education, Art) who are selected for the bilingual education team on the base of their enthusiasm, experience, knowledge and the subject they teach. The coordinator of the bilingual education stream will also join the team on the study trip. She is a teacher of English, it is her job to motivate and inspire the teachers and secure the outcomes of the trip. During the study trip we will follow classes concerning language development in the morning, and classes concerning CLIL in the afternoon. In the evening and the weekend we will take part in cultural activities and excursions. Outcomes: Teachers develop their confidence and ability to adapts materials and CLIL activities to their own teaching context, and their language skills have increased. Furthermore, they can use their experiences in their lessons. Not only the bilingual stream will profit from this, but the other classes that these teacher teach will also improve. We hope that the enthusiastic bilingual education team will encourage other teachers at our school to use CLIL in the regular lessons as well.
