Opetussuunnitelma, kestävä tulevaisuus ja oppimisympäristöt koulun kehittämisessä - Curriculum, the Sustainable Future and Learning Environments in School Development
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The planned project is closely connected to the sustainable future and the development of learning environments as well as creativity and various approaches to attain high proficiency in different areas of reading skills. All these areas are represented in curriculum development both within our own school and nation wide, new national curriculum framework OPS2016. University Teacher Training School at Joensuu, JNOR, belongs to the eNorssi-network, which is an active partner with the Finnish National Board of Education. One of the tasks of eNorssi is further education and research, to which JNOR can contribute with its international contacts and ideas. The first aim of the project is to increase the professional skills of the participating teachers, get international impressions and new ideas, network with colleagues during the conferences and courses and perhaps find new partners for future projects and co-operation as actually has happened already earlier. The second aim is to introduce Finnish general education and new trends in teacher education, especially education for the sustainable future, which is a new element in Joensuu classroom teacher training, in conferences and seminars. The third aim is to find and gather materials and ideas for the present curriculum development in Finland. The teachers and the principal of our school take part in conferences, seminars and courses in Turkey, Croatia, Great Britain and Malta. Two teachers will take part in a seminar "International Seminar on Education for Sustainable Development: "ESD at the Crossroads", which is organized by The Learning Teacher Network, LTN, in Istanbul, Turkey, in September 26-27, 2014. The aim of the seminar is to deal with the latest trends and ideas in sustainable development as well as find and strive for possibilities to develop and influence different areas of education in their own institutions and more widely, if possible, in each respective country. Both participating teachers, Merja Kukkonen and Eija Liisa Sokka-Meaney are classroom teachers, teachers trainers and lecturers at JNOR. Ms Kukkonen has central responsibilities in curriculum development both in her own school as well as in the eNorssi national network. Ms. Sokka-Meaney is a member in the Development group for teaching practice, school librarian, school international coordinator and lectures to international students on Finnish education and organizes their activities. She is also an active member in the Learning Teacher Network, LTN. Ms Tarja Lehikoinen-Suviranta, who is a teacher in mother tongue, literature and Finnish as a foreign language, will take part a course Creativity and Learning in Malta in October, 7-11, 2014. She is also a teacher trainer and teachers' in-service trainer. Her work covers a large spectrum of ages from early education to high school, since she teacher Finnish as a foreign language to all these age groups. Three teachers, Minna Haring, Merja Kukkonen, Eija Liisa Sokka-Meaney, as well as the principal of basic education at JNOR Dr Heikki Happonen will take part in a conference organized by the LTN (www.learningteacher.eu) in Zagreb, Croatia, in April 16-18, 2015. The conference, Innovation for Development in Learning and Sustainability, has emphasis on the sustainable development and creativity. These will be discussed from different approaches of the curriculum development and new learning environments. Some teachers will take part in courses which deal with subject didactic innovations. Ms Muusa Lehti, music teacher, lecturer and teacher trainer, is planning to take part in a music course in Gloucester, Great Britain. This course has been organized earlier and she was accepted there, but for personal reasons was unable to participate. Therefore it is reasonable to suppose that the same course will be organized later again during 2014-2015 by the same organizer. She also teaches courses to student teachers and in-service training for teachers. She is the director of the school choir and e.g. has done school opera projects with the Finnish National Opera. Ms Päivi Vesala, classroom teacher, lecturer and teacher trainer, is planning to participate in a seminar or a conference on childhood research and place-based education, which are some of the latest trends in her research and interests at the moment. These are also linked to the sustainable development and future. Ms Vesala is writing her doctoral thesis on learning environments especially the school yard as a learning environment. At the moment there is no information of relevant and interesting events for her, but regularly there have been conferences on these themes. Two lecturers, teachers of English are retiring in 2013-2014. At the moment there is no knowledge of the new teachers. However, according to the former teachers it would be good for the new teacher/s to be able to take part in an in-service training course in an English speaking country.
