Opetusmetodologian päivitys ja opetuksen uudet haasteet: TVT ja ilmiöpohjaisuus
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The school world is going through some major changes while it is also influenced by the present austerity measures in Finnish society. The expectations directed at upper secondary school education are various, not the least by institutions of further studies and working life. Teachers in upper secondary education will face many demanding challenges in the future. The new curriculum introduces us to distance learning, team and project work, interdisciplinary approach to learning and digital learning. The matriculation exams will become electronic. In addition, schools should open their doos to the outside world and network with other schools both in Finland and abroad. These important 21st-century learning skills will be big challenges for us teachers. The only means to adapt to them and feel comfortable using them in the classrooms is to educate ourselves. The purpose of our 2-year project is to give the teachers of Sibelius-lukio upper secondary school the opportunities to find new tools and get international collegial help for facing these challenges. This would take place on different training courses arranged all over Europe in the teachers' own subjects. Because we find the usage of ICT and interdisciplinary approach in teaching particularly challenging, we decided to highlight them in our project. The project involves 13 teachers of different subjects whose work experience and backgrounds differ a lot from each other. What we all have in common is the willingness to develop not only ourselves but also our school and also to network with our European colleagues. As a result of participating in these courses we are expecting to get not only new know-how but also new international partners for future co-op projects. In the course of the 2-year project period each participant will attend a 1-2-week course in their own subject, related to the themes of our project, somewhere in Europe. Each of us will share the skills and knowledge gained on the course with our colleagues not only in our own school but also with those we are collaborating with outside its walls. The hows and whens of sharing the course material will be agreed on with the head teacher before each training course. Also the teacher trainees, future teachers, will benefit from the updated knowhow of the teachers. After attending the individually selected courses ,the teachers will find it easier to adapt to the changing world of education with their updated methodology. The increased knowhow and new skills in digital learning help them to manage better at work and also prove useful when writing the new curriculum for our school because digital and interdisciplinary learning play an important part in it.The co-operation between the teachers and different subjects increases when planning these interdisciplinary courses together. The big and heterogenic student groups also benefit from these new approaches because their use is on a pedagogically sound basis.
