At our school we teach English since school year 2009/2010 in all groups 1-8. The children are taught by their own teacher. It is of course very important that these teachers are sufficiently motivated and trained to give proper English lessons. Now we are a couple of years further, we are ready to take a new step in increasing our quality. It is most important that the quality of teachers , and thus teaching English at our school , develops gradually. Therefore, we are planning a study visit to England with our team of 21 teachers to improve language- and teaching skills . During the study visit, a course will be given to all the teachers at their own level. There will be a differentiated language course and a course in didactic / methodological skills. The teachers have all recently taken their annual CEFR-tests and have knowledge of their language skills . From the reference levels achieved and their own teaching / coaching by the coordinator VVTO they all make their own learning objectives for the course. After and during the course, a report is made which reflects on their own progress . It offers good opportunities for everyone to be owner and director of their own learning process In addition to increasing skills we want to orient ourselves to the education system in England. We intend to visit one or two schools and get ideas / inspiration. We hope there will be possibilities to exchange experiences with foreign teachers and establish contacts we hopefully can use in the future. The main objectives of the study visit are: • increasing language skills in English (speaking , listening, reading and spelling) • improving didactic / methodological skills in teaching English as a second language • increasing confidence in teaching English • increasing capacity of our language teaching • obtaining a positive attitude towards internationalization Our team will have, prior to the project, several meetings to prepare. Objects of consideration will be assignments, learning objectives, but also a cultural preparation will be made herein. During the study trip to England, the main activities will be: • language training (differentiated) • didactic training for increasing skills in teaching English as a second language • visit one or two English schools • practical exercises to bring learned into practice immediately, integrate language skills with teaching assignments Result We want to improve our quality of teaching English and our commitment to internationalization. The world is changing at breakneck speed , and we want to provide the kids at our school the best opportunities to grow and develop . The early learning of English and opportunities to explore a world that is bigger than our school is part of our vision. A better skilled teacher will be able to give better English lessons. After the project, all teachers will take their annual CEFR-tests to see if their English language skills have improved, compared to the results of the February 2014 tests. We expect the teachers to make an own individual developmental plan in advance of the course. During and after the course they have to out build this with their thoughts, insights etc and keep record of this. All teachers have to prove their own progress on their learning objectives. We expect that after this study week our team of teachers will return enthusiastic and come back with new plans and ambitions for their own teaching. The teamwork will increase with each other and we can make a new step in the development of quality as a school. We wish to request a visitation from Earlybird and this comes as a big step closer. After the study we are going to dot the i's when it comes to our policies /learning objectives , and we're going to actually apply for this mark . In the long term, this study visit will help to ensure that we meet all quality criteria a good VVTO -English school must meet , and we can be proud of what we have achieved together!
