Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project “New competences of cultivation and application of ornamental plants” is conducted by our secondary school, “Arboretum Opeka” Marčan, the oldest school of agriculture in Croatia that has been educating students for 55 years in sectors of agriculture with the emphasis on horticultural professions. The school produces ornamental plants for further use in its well-equipped workshops. Experience has shown that Croatian market of ornamental plants lacks the range of own production, both in terms of quality and representation of plant species in cultivation. Floweracademy NI has been chosen as a partner for this project because of the experience in educating people in horticultural business. Through this project, vocational teachers and teaching associates are going to renew the old and acquire new competences in fields of horticulture and marketing, as well as contribute to the professional development of the school and therefore, motivate students and general public for the horticultural profession. The knowledge of ecological preservation and horticultural heritage is going to expand as well as the ecological approach to horticultural space arrangement. We are going to introduce new technological productions and ecologically acceptable cultivars in the production of ornamental plats, and offer a new range of ornamental plants and its application to the Croatian market. Eight vocational teachers and teaching associates in the field of horticulture are going to participate in the project. Except their educational approach, these teachers actively participate in the production and application of ornamental plants. The projects lasts 12 months and the mobility 7 days in Netherlands. So as to achieve the project’s objectives, only acknowledged manufacturers of ornamental plants in Netherlands were selected, including a visit to the horticultural fair Plantarium in Boskoop, a visit to the botanical garden in Leiden and the stock market in Aalsmeer and Naaldwijk. Introducing new trends in space greening that bring nature back to urban environment will be shown during the training part. The participants are going to acquire new knowledge and skills in fields of horticulture and marketing through workshops and training. The improved quality of vocational teachers and teaching associates is going to provide students with new knowledge and skills in fields of horticulture and marketing. It is going to introduce new technologies in manufacturing ornamental plants and new ecologically acceptable cultivars which extend the range of ornamental plants and therefore, improve their quality according to European standards. During the project, new contacts with foreign horticultural experts are going to be achieved, and their knowledge is going to be used in connecting the Croatian and Dutch market at the level of quality and range of ornamental plants.
