Meremäe is a rural municipality next to the border, which is about to perish due to a shortage of job opportunities. This project enables the youth to voice themselves to local authorities. In order for the rural municipality to function, it is important that the youth that, at the same time, are the future of the municipality could have an opportunity to participate in developing their native place. Establishing a Youth Council in the municipality allows the youth to participate in local decision-making processes and to have a say in the development of the village life in an active way. The project creates conditions for an active dialogue between the rural municipality council and the youth. The project was started entirely on the initiative of the young people themselves and allows the youth participating in the project to obtain various experiences. During the project a Youth Council team is formed and a continuous dialogue with the rural municipality government and the rural municipality council developed. 20 young people of 13-30 years of age actively take part in the project, while at least 45 young people are engaged via various activities. However, the project is primarily directed at those young people that become members of the Youth Council by the end of the project. The project’s activities are mainly developing teamwork and for developing communication with the municipality council and the municipality government. The project’s main impact is that after its completion there is an operating Youth Council taking actively part in the municipality council’s work in the Rural Municipality of Meremäe. We would also like to help neighbouring municipalities establish a youth council of their own, in order to give them an opportunity to have a say in the development of their native municipality. The project does not finish as of its end date, rather than goes on for years to come. The project is the first step for the further development and sustainability of the rural municipality by developing love and respect for the native place in us, the youth.
