New Youth Voice
Start date: Sep 10, 2009,

This project aimed at helping some 39 young people to explore the reasons why forcibly displaced persons leave their country and the difficulties which such asylum seekers go through in order to reach mainland Europe, while also leading to a humane and informed understanding of the current local situation regarding migrants. The activities each involved a weekend of physical, intellectual and emotional exercises were mainly funded through an EU grant.***Please, indicate and explain the reasons for eventual changes between your initial application and the activities finally implemented, e.g. composition of partner promoters and/or participants, duration of the Activity, Activity programme. The project was expected to be implemented over a period of 5 months and aimed to attract some 120 youths to participate over 6 weekends of activities. Despite continuous efforts made to attract the targeted amount of persons, the period of implementation was extended by almost a year, and the initial target of six 'weekend activities' was not reached (four weekend activities took place) -we believe that this was mainly due to the fact that participation in the Activities required a substantial level of commitment and understandably a level of deprivation from daily comforts; there were also other detemining factors such as the large number of other activities organised for students within the educational institutions we targeted, all of which competed for their interest and commitment Invitations, follow-ups, and meetings with students were held for several educational institutions in our effort to encourage students to participate in the Project.Promotion of the Project was made with Junior College, Higher Secondary, University, St Martin's College, St Aloysius College Sixth Form, De La Salle College Sixth Form, and several Girl Guides Groups. Of these, we managed to carry out four Activities - St Aloysius College Sixth Form, De la Salle College Sixth Form, University and Qawra Girl Guides. All efforts with the other institutions failed to recruit enough interest. We would also like to point out that eight more weekend Activities were organised and cancelled at the last minute due to poor turnout. In some cases, more than one weekend Activity was offered to each College/University (in different scholastic years, and therefore targeting a different set of students). Also, for each weekend Activity which we orgnised, less students actually turned up on the day, than had originally applied to participate. Our maximum capacity was for 20 students each time, and despite the number of initial applications and our emphasis on comitment on application, the number who actually turned up each Friday evening was substantially less. Thus the Activities consisted of 4 weekends for 39 participants.Evaluation sessions were planned to be held on a separate date from the actual weekend Activities, however, following an assessment of the situation and availability of the participants, we held on-site evaluation sessions at the end of each Activity instead. Photographs of some of the evaluation sessions can be found within the PowerPoint Presentation entitled 'Presentation In Their Shoes' a soft copy of which accompanies this report.Besides the fact that we held four out of the goal of six weekends, costs did not actually turn out to be as high as budgeted in the application for funding.
