New Theme Village Business Development Opportunities in Latgale and Aukstaitija Cross Border Region (VILLAGE HERITAGE)
Start date: Jul 4, 2010, End date: Jul 3, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project aims to help develop a new tourism destination – a network of theme villages in the Euroregion Country of Lakes. A total of 10 villages in Latvia and 10 in Lithuania that have saved the national traditions, crafts and want to develop them and promote innovative ways of using heritage have decided to participate in this project as the potential theme villages, becoming the attractions of the new tourism route. Each village has chosen a theme that shows the best of it. For example, the village of Rozupe, Latvia, plans to specialize in dairy products and honey, while the village of Rojus, Lithuania (in English – Paradise), will play around with the theme of apples. Other products that villages will work with include bread, sauna, sheep and wool, smithy products, local cuisine, etc. Villagers that plan to start their own business in the framework of the theme village will be given training in how to do that. A marketing strategy will also be developed. Lastly, as a result, all six theme villages will be opened to visitors in one go, so everyone can choose what they want to visit depending on their interests. Expected Results: Improving surrounding life environment in Latvian and Lithuanian eastern border regions achieved involving 869 youngsters living in project target territory by organizing 2 landscaping campaigns, improving 11 public objects in 8 border communities and designing a friendship park of Euroregion Country of lakes. Organization of a forum for environmental technologies and green investments, international 3-days motivation training for 16 youngsters.
