New dimensions of Euro-Mediterranean integration through migration: socioeconomic impact and policies

The conflict in Syria and in some North African and Middle East countries has generated a flow of refugees going to Europe. This fact has pointed out the relevance for the European Union of migratory subjects. The objective of this project is the analysis immigration in Europe from Mediterranean countries to get further knowledge of its several core aspects: 1) the context of the previous Euro-Mediterranean integration process and how migration has been addressed; 2)the socioeconomic effects of this incoming population distinguishing between refugees and standard immigrants; 3)the infrastructure capacity in European countries to host and to integrate immigrants; 4) the ability of the European Union institutions to change procedures and regulations to achieve a faster integration and a better design of migration policies.This conceptual objective is completed with other practical objectives: • to propose some guideline for building and applying sustainable and replicable policies for integration of immigrants (networks, citizens mobility, social entrepreneurship and social cohesion). These proposals will be sent as a consultation document to the European Commission.• To obtain an intangible value added by making this matter sensitive and accessible using various forms of dissemination of results.• To create new clusters of EU knowledge derived from the research.• To promote and create new studies on Euro-Mediterranean migrations not only in European countries but also in North African and Middle East countries. The project follows a cross-fertilization strategy according to the target groups considered and to the variety of multidisciplinary subjects to be dealt.
