Start date: Sep 30, 2008, End date: Jan 30, 2013 PROJECT  FINISHED

An important part of the industrial fabric of the cross-border region is taken up by companies recycling plastics from the automotive industry. In terms of sustainable development, the project contributes to partiallyreducing the environmental impact of the industrial activity both in Wallonia and in the Nord-Pas de Calais area, where the plastic producing and processing industry and car manufacturers have a strong presence. The project is entirely based on the complementary expertise of three nanocomposites research centres. The close collaboration between these R&D centres enables the development within the cross-border area of a competence cluster in the field of nanocomposites unmatched both in Belgium and France. These competences are used to develop new ways of adding value to plastics from the automotive industry. The project makes scientific and technical expertise available to SMEs to promote cross-border innovation and a technological development culture within the companies. Achievements: Screening of a large amount of functional nanocharges to identify the most promising ones. - Selection of nanocharges enabling the improvement of the morphology of the mixtures. - Optimisation of the elaboration procedure at pilot scale to obtain a material with suitable mechanical properties. - Testing on the mix formulation to obtain enhanced mechanical properties. - Improved understanding of the phenomena constituting the structure and morphology of the recycled materials. - development of materials with enhanced mechanical properties in accordance with fire standards. - Dissemination and Communication of the obtained results.
