The training „Learning under the open sky” took place from 17.05 to 23.05 2015 in Iceland. SPOT - school of foreign languages has for a long time, operating in a small town in conditions of crisis and strong competition, been looking for innovative ways of teaching. Through new methods the owner – after 25 years of running the company wanted to prevent burnout, particularly among women 50 +. That’s why she initiated an informal group of “Nowalijki”, which aim is to integrate the residents of Piaseczno, take care of Polish traditions and culture, and above all lifelong learning and improve the quality of life. The goal of the project was to change the approach of teaching, changing habits and conscious management of free time intended for recreation. In addition, in the sphere of ecology within the framework of communing with nature – development of creative thinking and sensitivity to the beauty of nature. The multicultural topic was also of great importance, where the exchange of experiences of teachers from many countries gave the training a European dimension. Before leaving, analysis of needs were carried out and we managed to get materials to pass on in Iceland. The training in Iceland fully met our expectations. Curcus Iceland - the inviting organisation for the training „Under the open sky”, for many years has been passing its experience and best practises. Every day 3 modules containing theory, lectures, discussions and workshops took place, as well as observations, physical exercises, afterthoughts. For me they were an inspiration – giving me tools and means for future activities. All the organisations (15 teachers from Finland, Spain, Poland, Slovenia, Greece and France) participating in the project, showed their commitment by passing their experience on “Learning under the open sky” in their countries as well as in the immediate surroundings. Most of the workshops were conducted outdoors and deepened empirical learning and ecological way of living. A big attention was paid to working in pairs and group work, which resulted in learning team building and forming leaders. After the training, all the gathered methods, were transferred to the ground of Piaseczno. Training for teachers, outdoor workshops for interested organisations and the citizens of Piaseczno were organised. We also presented photos from Iceland on a special exhibition. Thanks to these workshops we gained new motivation for teaching foreign languages and lifelong learning. The new knowledge connecting learning and recreation encouraged the local community do get involved in the civic activities in the spirit of „Experimental learning”. New methods contributed to the widening of horizons of action and the increase of the participants, organisations and interested groups’ mobility. Thanks to multimedia, the knowledge, skills and experience were effectively transferred and spread, not only on a local but also national, European and international level. In the future we plan further initiatives establishing contacts and deepening gained knowledge, expertise and experience.
