Nature farming : Natural & Sustainable Region Effect!
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Two volunteers, coming from Italy and France, will work in the EVS-project 'Nature farming: Natural & Sustainable Region Effect'. This project will take place from October 1st 2016 until September 30th 2017 at the organic carefarm Hamster Mieden in the village of Drogeham. It is situated in the countryside of the province of Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. The Stifting Wurkgroep Bûtengebiet Droegeham (the full official name of the association) organises active and educative farm visits, school visits, excursions, work camps etc. on the organic farm and nature park 'Hamster Mieden'. An important goal of the farm is to educate children and adults to be more involved in the sustainable managment of the natural environment. The mission of Hamster Mieden is: ‘Enjoying and learning to appreciate animals and nature by running the farm in partnership with others –both youngsters and adults- in a socially responsible manner’. During the visits the groups get aquainted with the work on the farm and learn to relate what they are doing to the daily food on their plate.According to SIW and the host organisation the aim of chosing the right EVS-volunteers should be connected to their sincere motivation to do voluntary work that contributes to society, while broadening their own cultural horizon and being prepared to work on personal development.Within the local context of Hamster Mieden their opportunities to show this will be connected to the following tasks and contributions: - Taking care of the animals and the crops in the garden of the farm- Hosting groups of children and teach them (in Dutch) about the farm animals- Activities in the natural environment- Maintenance of the natural landscape- Sharing their interests and experience -in order to find out (together with the farmer) how to implement their skills and experience in the daily life at the farm -to use this in the planning of a food forest -think how this could create awareness about sustainable use of the natural environment -and assist in the preparation of an international seminar around this subject at the farmIn a larger context these objectives aim at bringing parties together to learn from each other on how to connect farming and nature in a sustainable way. By exchanging experience and work methods, new ways will be discussed and developed. The overarching objective of this project is bringing people together to exchange ideas, not only subject related but also on a personal level. Getting in touch with unknown values and customs, thus facing the opportunity to realize that their way of thinking and acting is just one out of many possibilities. Directly or indirectly involved, all parties will take part of this exchange: the team members of Hamster Mieden, the volunteers, the villagers at Drogeham and the children and the youngsters who visit the farm. By inviting international and scientific participants for the seminar, dissemination reaches other levels and places as well, combining scientific with both international and locally experienced knowledge. What we aim for in this project is that the people involved will take these (learning) experiences with them, develop themselves further and strengthen their qualities in the future. When people from different countries are brought together, their shared inspirations and knowledge will travel back home and be disseminated again there.
