Nascholingscursus(sen) in Engeland
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context/backgrounds and objectives of the project: CBS Het Kompas wants to aim on improving the proficiency and language didactics of the teachers. The objective is to successively carry on with VVTO English. We want to achieve this by staying in England, with a big part of the team. This way we want to not only improve our proficiency but also learn about the culture and the habits of United Kingdom. Internationalization is at the top of the agenda. The next step for the school will be to animate the English lessons and to give CLIL lessons. With the course in England we want to expand the teacher skills so the teachers will be able to give attractive lessons where the children will enjoy and learn English. The participants, description of activities and execution of the project: Content basic course (level 1): the course is for (primary school) teachers who want to increase their skills and their confidence towards using the English language. It is a practical course, where the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) will be practised. As well as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and classroom language. Besides that we will get practical lesson ideas and teaching/learning formats which we can use directly in the classroom, such as songs, rhymes, drama and so on. The project will be realised in collaboration with Earlybird. Earlybird advises and supports us regarding logistics of the study trip to language institute ‘Pilgrims’in Canterbury, UK. Pilgrims is a renowned language institute and accredited by the British Council. In the terms and conditions of ‘Pilgrims’ you can find more informative about the health and safety of the participants. The expected results and effects on the short and long term: The next few years we want to retain and strengthen the quality label set by Earlybird. We want to guard the quality of ‘VVTO’ by means of schooling in England, team trainings, collegial consultation, guidance in the classroom by Earlybird and modern teaching methods such as Cookie, iPockets and Backpack Gold. Early English is an important component of our school profile. We describe it in our curriculum, the school plan and the year plan of ‘Het Kompas’. We expect that we will be better able at teaching English. Our English proficiency will further develop so that we can teach other subjects in the English, also known as CLIL lessons. We also hope to receive practical tips and ideas that we can apply in the classroom. We receive guidance of Earlybird. In school we have an active ‘expertise group English’ who track developments, organise study moments with the team, provides assurance of the agreed policy and regularly offers new supplementary materials (such as books, games and so on). From ‘lumpsum’ we invest in (post) training of (new) colleagues. Every year all the activities are evaluated secured and the next steps will be determined.
