context/background and objectives of our project; De Nieuwe Weg wants to focus on the improvement of the language skills and language didactics of its teachers. The aim is to further develop the early English teaching programme.
By residing in the United Kingdom for a week with our complete team, we will not only improve our own language skills but also learn more about the culture and habits of the United Kingdom and its people. Internationalisation is high on our agenda.
The next step in the development of our early English teaching programme is to provide our children with content and language integrated learning (CLIL). With this course we want to make sure that all of our teachers are proficient CLIL teachers.
number and profile of our participants, description of activities and methodology to be used in carrying out the project; We have divided our team into two groups. Three of our teachers, who haven’t been to Canterbury before, will attend the first level. The other twelve teachers, who attended the level 1 course in 2013, will attend the level 2 course.
Level 1: The course is for teachers of Young Learners who need to improve their ability and
confidence in their use of English and develop their teaching skills for Young Learners.
This course is practical. By ‘doing’ activities designed for the Primary classroom, the teachers will
experience the methodology from the Young Learner’s perspective. The course is both a
language improvement and a methodology course.
Level 2: The aim of this course is to help the teachers gain confidence in their ability to get better and better at using English for your teaching. This course is both a language and methodology course. It will not be subject specific but will work on language that is needed across the curriculum. However,
participants will be encouraged to teach a topic related to their teaching subject, so that they can
focus on their specific needs. EarlyBird advises and supports us in travelling to Pilgrims in Canterbury. Pilgrims is a reputable language school and is accredited by the British Council among others. More information about the safety and protection of the participants can be found in the terms and conditions made by Pilgrims.
a short description of the results, impact envisaged and the potential longer term benefits; The next few years we will work towards acquiring the EarlyBird quality label. By implementing the early English learning programme into our curriculum we will obtain the quality of our education. We watch over the quality of our English education through collegial consultation, team trainings, accompaniment by our internal coach, accompaniment by EarlyBird and HCO and by using the modern methods Playtime and Happy. In addition to this, our early English programme is an important part of our profiling and we inscribe this in our curriculum, school plan and year plan.
We expect this course to enable us to give English lessons of a high(er) quality. Our English language skills will further improve and we will be able to teach all kinds of subjects in English. In addition to this, we expect to get a lot of practical ideas to use in our own classrooms.
