Mythology In Our Language
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project is about discovering our national identity through an international European dimension. Mythology is our culture. Every country has its own myths which have affected their culture, their ethics, their traditions and their language. We need to address to our roots to discover how different and how similar we are as European citizens. Each country has a different and unique language but we have similar references in it. We are going to find out the similarities of the two countries in language through Mythology. Our project Mythology In Our Language is a new approach on the European perception of language in terms of common linguistic input. Mythology is a common language. We use common phrases and words derived from common knowledge of different myths. It is an innovative, interesting and funny way of discovering our common European identity. Our schools have never been previously involved in a similar or any other project. We are enthusiastic with the idea of involving Mythology into Language as we come from different backgrounds but still very similar in terms of tradition, ethics, temper and interests. In the project activities two schools from Secondary Education will be involved, one Greek (2o Geniko Lykeio Pyrgou) and one Spanish (IES VILLA DE VALLECAS) with two groups of students aged 16-18 and their teachers of English, Computing Technology and Ancient Greek. The number of the participants is 12 from the Greek School and 17 from the Spanish School. Our project will organize a number of activities during the implementation such as Internet and bibliographical search for myths by both partner schools, presentation of the above material by both partners in each school, collection of words or phrases from these myths that we use even today in our everyday language-study and analysis of their use and effect plus their meaning in the three languages: Spanish, Greek and English for the creation of a CD, meetings with experts (archaeologists and linguists), the creation of a blog which will host all the partners’ activities like a live journal, the creation of a website in which the students can upload all the necessary information about the activities, transnational meetings in Greece and Spain followed by events, visit to the museum and archaeological site of Ancient Olympia as well as visits to other Mythological sites of the area to introduce the students to Mythology in a closer approach, a TV interview about the project that will be followed by a relevant event from the local authorities, press conference and articles in local newspapers and dissemination through Social Media and European Portals like e- Twinning. The students will get highly involved in designing the project. The proficiency of English communication will be much more improved. They will learn to perform the research work independently or through team work, they will learn how to interact, to analyze and obtain the necessary conclusions. The students will learn how to share tasks and responsibilities in order to accomplish them; they will learn to interact through discussions and debates, to evaluate themselves and their project partners. Imagination, creativity and innovation will be developed and practiced along with the intellectual output. Their general knowledge will be much more developed because, directly or through ICT applications, they will get in contact with cultural elements from another European country. The teachers will get to know the educational system of the country that is involved in the partnership and they will exchange specialized information, thoughts and opinions of their work. A cross-curricular approach will be promoted and used for teaching purposes, as well as the IT applications. As a unit, the project will boost the integration, the tolerance and the mutual understanding between project partners. Through dissemination the general public, local organizations, local, national and European authorities and the media will be more aware and well informed of the fact that they are a part of the European society through real and personal acquaintances and contacts; discovering it through Mythology. The longer-term benefits are that the students will acquire new key competences in using ICT ; the project will promote and use new innovative practices in classroom education; promote and use the formal and informal strategies in education processes ;promote lifelong learning process ;prevent any manifestations of xenophobia, and strengthen national pride and awareness of the project participants ;develop the knowledge and ownership of the European cultural heritage and the respect for the European identity, its plurality and its linguistic richness ;improve and build on their foreign language competences; build strong relationships between people, schools and cities that will not be finished with the end of the project. Overall, the project will boost our European identity and conscience.
