The 9-month (September 2014 - June 2015) long EVS project by Metsäkartano Youth Centre and it's local partners in Kuopio, North-Savo, Finland will brought a Spanish volunteer (Ana Hernandez Veracruz) to learn and work together with youth work in Kuopio. The volunteer worked actively with young people and children in local youth work organisations (Gender sensitive approach youth house, Parish of Kuopio, Arts and crafts workshop, After-school clubs at Snellman School) organising cultural workshops and events, supporting the youth workers in their daily work, and creating and informing young people of learning mobility possibilities through European funding. Thought supporting these local actors, the volunteer had the chance to learn in several youth work / educational approaches and develop skills related to youth work and education. The volunteer was a teacher student from a rural background in Spain, so the EVS aims and tasks were fitting the needs and wishes quite well. The aim of the project is to gain added value to the existing practices of youth work and education in the local organisations through adding a intercultural / international element (volunteer) to the day to day context of youth work. The specific objectives were: On volunteers level: - Supporting youth workers / educators in 3 organisations in Kuopio in their day-to-day work - Organizing intercultural experiences (such as workshops, lessons etc) for local young people attending the organisations - Engaging with local young people through an intercultural perspective - Developing cultural awareness and communication of the local young people (Kuopio) and professionals working with them On organisational level: - Competence develpment of organisations and individuals working with them in relation to Erasmus+ and working in an intercultural setting - Local networking / cooperatin between non-formal and formal learning actors in Kuopio The project attempts to tackle the following issues in the local context: - Predjudices of young people towards foreign cultures - Lack of european level youth projects in the area of Kuopio - Breaking barriers / building bridges between non-formal and formal education
