Multilingual Early Language Transmission
Start date: Nov 1, 2009,

The Project answers to a specific need observed in many EU regions: Bilingual education of children is not supported enough at preschool level. It lacks efficient methodology or simply awareness, in particular regarding Less Widely Thaught Languages (LWTL). The project aims to fostering multilingualism among kids. It is both about safeguarding LWTL and giving language learning chances to unilingual families. The Project will support high quality provision of immersion education and mainly seek to address the shortfall of resources and skills amongst practitioners. The objectives are to: 1) Develop a teaching methodology and language transmission process. 2) Raise parents’ awareness about multilingualism 3) Teach practitioners on how to foster language learning 4) Raise policy awareness across the EU. To achieve this, the Project will first deliver a research report presenting best practice cases in the EU and teaching methodologies that will nurture an information guide for parents and a toolkit proposing specific methods to preschool practitioners. A network of agents will support this process and help practitioners. Dissemination and exploitation will be ensured through various outputs including a Facebook page, conference in Brussels, newsletters, etc. The Project will also be supported by the NPLD. P1,P3,P4 are NPLD members and work and collaborate on common issues in the EU. P3 is planning to become member. The Project will equip practitioners with enough skills/expertise to provide a productive language learning environment for kids. Parents will be more informed about how to further support this. It will also provide a base for the children receiving bilingual education in later years and increase the number of speakers of LWTL. It will also improve intercultural dialogue by providing a platform for countries and regions to cooperate in a formal context. Finally, the Project will inform and convince policy-makers about the need for policy support .
