There are 600 million adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living in the developing world - of which 90 million are in low-income countries where per capita income for those who in poverty is less than $1,005 per year. Although undervalued and often neglected, the reality is that the state of adolescent girls’ welfare has the potential to positively influence the prospects of their families and communities. More people are realising that the oppression of girls and young women has a detrimental effect on society as a whole. There is a growing understanding that investment in girls and young women has a measurable positive impact in the alleviation of poverty and other developmental goals. At Women Win we believe that when a girl’s individual empowerment is combined with changing cultural and societal norms, a better life for girls and their communities is within reach. Girls with leadership potential are an extremely valuable resource for low socioeconomic communities because they have the potential to serve as leaders and mentors for other girls. The benefit of building girls’ leadership abilities in these communities is three-fold. It provides heroes and role models for young girls, empowers and strengthens older girls, and challenges outdated community norms. Women Win believes sport serves as an effective platform to discover and develop individual leadership. Sport cultivates the leadership skills inherent in girls, creates an ‘enabling environment’ in which girls practice leadership skills and allows them to actively use their knowledge and skills to drive change in their own lives and their communities and challenge the power structure within communities.Women Win with our partner organisations proposes The Moving on Up Programme (MOUP), consisting of a Girls in Sport Leadership Camp, which is an opportunity for young women currently working with sport for development organisations to build their leadership through a two-week leadership and digital storytelling camp and a yearlong mentoring match with an international mentor. We will also host a one-day seminar bringing together the participants from the camp with youth from The Netherlands to discuss the importance of sport for development, in particular for girls and young women. The closing event of the programme will bring together participants from the leadership programme at one of the leading partner organisations to discuss the shared experiences and learnings, and engage the wider community through a tournament. This programme will deliver leadership, skills and knowledge development as well as an exchange with peers which will ultimately lead to personal pro-social development and broader societal cohesion, creating more opportunities for young leaders in education and employment, improving access and participation in society and fostering mutual solidarity.
