Movemakers: co-creating new ways of learning
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This is a learning project for adult education professionals. It aims to foster strategic cooperation and exchange of good practices amongst educators in the field of innovation and entrepreneurial education for adults. The project is an attempt to harness the potential of innovation in adult education for meeting some of the challenges in a rapidly changing world, including labour market needs, youth unemployment, ageing population or globalisation challenges. We encourage practitioners in education to take bold and innovative steps in shifting education and learning environments when needed to meet the needs and dreams of 21 century adult learner. In other words, educators become movemakers by engaging their entrepreneurial spirit and leadership in their educational practice. MoveMakers started between five organizations from Estonia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. Forty educational changemakers and adult education practitioners joined the playground for learning and experimentation. At the core of the project was the MoveMakers LAB learning journey - an international, highly experiential training program for adult education practitioners. The journey consisted of three international LAB Meetings in the Netherlands, Denmark, Estonia, local Meet-Ups and prototyping time - “Make your Move” - in 2015-2016. Our insights, discoveries and further questions could be explored in intellectual outputs: two books - “MoveMakers on the Move: the Story of Our Learning Journey” and “Making New Moves in Education and Learning” and in a documentary movie to be found at www.movemakers.eu. We employed a wide variety of methods and tools: “Art of Hosting” methods (www.artofhosting.org), Theory U (www.presencing.com), Design Thinking (e.g. http://designthinking.ideo.com), as well storytelling, visual facilitation and other co-creative practices. The meetings incorporated study visits to pioneering examples of education innovation in the fields of entrepreneurial adult learning. It fostered an entrepreneurial spirit - or the spirit of movemaking - by promoting learner-centredness, participatory methodologies and peer-to-peer learning. In total 3 prototype courses were developed and tested in real life during the learning journey: Learning Design Lab (Estonia), Creativity & Innovation course for undergraduate students at ISM University of Management and Economics (Lithuania), Hack your Education (the Netherlands). In total 80 participants took part in prototype courses. Additional 10 ideas were developed as possible prototypes during the program. - Learning Design Lab (Estonia, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Tlirr7DFsE&list=UUzgVr5sPl4R_XPqdAD9S5aQ&index=6) was an open prototype course to reimagine the field of training and explore the future of learning in a format of 4 meetings, 4 hours each in 4 different locations in the city. The course was designed for HR and training managers from public/private organisations and NGOs. - Hack your Education (Netherlands) program focused on empowering first-year university students to take ownership over their learning. In this course students ‘hacked’ their school projects and researches so that they could contribute to their personal vision and mission. - Creativity & Innovation course for undergraduate students at ISM University of Management and Economics (Lithuania) was a three-month course aimed at creating a hands-on learning experience for highly motivated and courageous students, who wanted to expand their capacity to be creative, as well as to work with others to co-create innovative solutions to real business problems. Short descriptions of the prototype courses could be found in the book “MoveMakers on the Move: the Story of Our Learning Journey”. We believe that the learning from the project, the new skills and the strengthened capacity of participants and partner organisations will lead to new initiatives in the field of innovation, entrepreneurial education for adults and beyond.
