LO MAINADER LET'S GO TO SCOTLAND !
Our ambition was to motivate our pupils and to make them improve in the learning of english by the discovery of another european culture from the beginning of their english cursus. The CP-CE1 and Ce2 teachers of the school of Magescq wished to form themselves in Edinburgh so as to organize a scottish year in 2016 to their 47 pupils aged from 6 to 9.
From september 2015, the aim of the first semester was the acquisition of the basis of communication (vocabulary and linguistic structures). For this the teachers used existing methods linked with scotland (Ghostie and Hamish) that they completed with methodological tools acquired during their course in Edinburgh. They also used the digital resources already existing in their school. The highlights of the project (Discovery of United Kingdom, virtual trip, school show), were the learning moments and the moments of reinvestment of the new knowledge by the pupils.
During a whole day of class on the 17th of May 2016 the pupils accomplished a virtual trip to Scotland by participating to workshops that enabled them to communicate in english so as to act and learn about the Scottish culture. Led in english by the teachers and some english speaking parents, these langage workshops designed thanks to the knowledges brought back from Scotland by the teachers enabled the children to :
- perform administrative procedures for flying
- discover the city of Edinburgh,
- visit and act in scottish landscapes (Highlands, Isle of Skye, Loch Ness and Loch shin, Eilean Donan Castle),
- participate to highland games
- play scottish happy families
- participate to a musical workshop,
- sew a traditionnal sporran,
- share a typical lunchtime.
all of this in english so that the children may train their ability to understand (school instructions) and their ability to speak in english to one another.
After this day the pupils collected the photos taken and made their own paper or digital logbook for the school blog. This work has been diffused to other classes and families by the means of an exhibition and of the internet (L@ndecoles).
On june 2016, for the school show in the arenas, pupils presented to parents, officials and citizens of Magescq the scottish danses, the musics, the costums, the legends and the scottish decorations prepared all the year.
Thus, the time of a year, the pupils and the families of Magescq have been opened to another european culture, and understood the necessity to communicate in another langage and to be opened to the world and its different aspects.
During the school year 2015-2016, all the classes of our school participated to different projects in order to discover Europe and specially Scotland.
The communication of the knowledges gathered by the teachers during their stay in Scotland and shared with their colleagues in Magescq and far away (Landes) will enable the organization of similar experiences with the other classes of our district.
