motion of Mass Sports in the Cross-border Area of Municipality of Petrich, Bulgaria and Municipality of Serres, Greece (Sports for All)
Start date: Mar 31, 2012, End date: Mar 30, 2014 PROJECT  FINISHED

The White Paper on Sport 2007, laying down the EU approach to sport, underlines the societal role of sport. The two Municipalities, Petrich in Bulgaria and Serres in Greece have long tradition in grassroots sports hence they have numerous sports organizations, activities and school teams. Their sports facilities are developed but inadequate in terms of type, quantity and condition to meet growing demands. Thus, its essential both to improve the existing sport facilities as well as to create new in Petrich and Serres. The main objectives of the project are: 1. To promote health and social welfare to the local population through mass sport and cooperation. 2. To establish, develop and improve the conditions for joint sporting activities in the project area as a basis for sustainable future cooperation in this field. Expected Results: Immediate effect resulting from the action is established one major Sports Network in the area and indicated involved sub-networks in various sport disciplines (including for people with specific needs if identified). It is based on the improved conditions for sport in terms of: established new fully operational multi-purpose Municipal Sports Hall in Petrich and improved seven (7) sport facilities in Serres; elaborated Sports Agenda for future sports cooperation and related communications activities; people and organizations involved in the events of the project, public, organizations and groups reached through various means. In compliance with the requirements large portion important information will be prepared and presented to the public raising the awareness. Benefits: Main benefits of playing sports are not only strong body, relaxing, better health and less risk of drug or alcohol use. As for the children and the young people this also means supporting the processes of personal psychological and social development: achieving self controlling, building character and discipline, active socialization through partnership ethics and team spirit. The eventual risks in sports activities are related to that of possible injury, concussions, including gym class. But only permanent sports activities and maintaining good physical condition prevent and reduce the likelihood of such cases not only in sports but also in everyday life. Sports activities not only develop the person and provide an opportunity for rational and useful entertainment. They also improve his/her/its health and develop the mind and thereby increase his/her/its performance and reduce the budget for medical expenses of the family (and national health system too).
