More languages, better opportunities
Start date: Jul 31, 2014, End date: Jul 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The aims of our project are to improve our teaching of languages, introduce Spanish into our curriculum and broaden opportunities to include younger children. We would like to also make our language teaching more exciting through increasing staff's knowledge and confidence, finding new teaching ideas and resources and establishing a link with the school in Spain and France. We hope that by doing this we will be able to address the gender gap of attainment in our school and build all our pupils' self-esteem. We would like this link to lead to joint projects with these schools and, eventually, international residential trips for year six. We would also like to raise the status of languages within our school giving it the same consideration as all other curriculum subjects. We would also like to use this project to improve our children's understanding of other cultures and challenge stereotypes. We would like to achieve these aims through a two-year project involving 12 mobility activities, (6 to Spain 6 to France). These activities will involve staff from throughout our school (Key Stage I and Key Stage 2) taking part in training courses involving intensive language learning, cultural activities, language teaching methodology and pedagogy, professional discussions and spending time in Spanish and French primary schools. The teachers and support staff who take part in these activities will feedback the outcomes to the rest of the staff, spreading the benefits and helping us to take a whole school approach to this activity. The benefits will include a wider curriculum with more language opportunities for pupils, better teaching and learning leading to better attainment and languages becoming embedded and integrated rather than viewed as being an add-on extra. The establishment of a link with schools in Spain and France will contribute to our children's wider understanding of the world. Success in language learning will help to close the gender gap between boys and girls and build all our pupils' self-esteem leading to better attainment in the long term.
