MORE EUROPE IN THREE MOVES
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The State Secondary School "Ettore Palumbo" in Brindisi, formerly known as Istituto Magistrale, comprises the following courses: Human Sciences, Economic and Social Studies, and Foreign Languages. The territory where the school is located is characterised by serious economic and social problems, as well as by high unemployment. The school is attended by 1185 students, belonging to various social classes and coming from the city and the province; the staff includes 104 teachers and 20 office clerks, technical staff and school caretakers. This project fullfills the requirements of our school which, through the implementation of international projects, would like to feel Europe as a closer and more tangible entity. Three strategies have been pinpointed in order to achieve this goal: 1) the training of a larger and more qualified project team, 2) the training of CLIL teachers, 3) the training of a coordinator in the language department. 1) A larger and more qualified project team will efficiently raise funds and manage all project phases; this team will be able to plan, manage, organise and assess all kinds of international activities and guarantee the quality of all projects by linking them to the curriculum. The project team to be formed will include the headmaster (a former language teacher with previous experience in planning and assessing PON modules) and an English language teacher with very good computer skills and outstanding training experience. It will also include an administrative clerk, with a degree in Economics, who will deal with the presentation of the candidates, management of candidate selection, communication with the National Agency and management of financial issues. 2) CLIL teachers will develop their language skills and their professional competency in the subjects of Philosophy, Natural Sciences and Physics, in order to meet the learning requirements of pupils who must compete in a global dimension. One coordinator will encourage cooperation amongst CLIL teachers and language teachers, so as to guarantee success in the learning path. The coordinator will be a native English teacher who is an expert in PON projects for the attainment of language certifications. 3) A coordinator in the language department will promote change in terms of internationalization by stimulating and supporting foreing language teachers to plan and fullfill projects of a European dimension. The coordinator will be an English language teacher who is tutor of PON projects and responsible for "Intercultura" in our school. To achieve these objectives, the staff candidates, applying for mobility, will attend structured courses in England in order to attain the required skills with the added value of a European dimension as well as language and professional development. The chosen courses include practical and in-class activities, observation of new strategies, field visits in schools to share best practices and to develop links with teachers of other countries in order to promote exchanges. Through the training of the missing key figures and the improvement of the quality of CLIL teaching, this project will produce mid and long term tangible changes which will enhance internationalization, innovation and quality in our school.
